Crystal Grower of Wide Band-gap II-VI Semiconductor Materials for Radiation Detection Applications

Responsibilities: Lead projects focused on the growth of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) and other related II-VI semiconductors used for radiation detection. Current projects involve development of detectors and arrays fabricated from CZT, CdMnTe and CdTeSe for spectroscopy and imaging of x-rays and gamma rays. Applications include nuclear nonproliferation, X-ray astronomy, medical imaging, and environmental monitoring. Responsibilities include the design and operation of crystal-growth furnaces based on the Bridgman and traveling heater methods, purification of source materials using zone refining and vacuum sublimation processes, compounding of elements for developing crystal-growth charge, characterization of crystals and devices, and detector fabrication. Efforts to maintain and upgrade laboratory capabilities devoted to material synthesis and crystal growth are expected. Other expectations include the preparation of publications, reports and proposals, presentation of research results at conferences, and interfacing with sponsors.

Required Experience: Experience with the purification and growth of II-VI semiconductor crystals, preferably for radiation-detection applications. Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work closely within a team are essential.

Desired Experience: 5 or more years of experience with growth of scintillation crystals used for radiation detection; detailed knowledge of the operation of semiconductor detectors, materials characterization methods for understanding defects in detector-grade crystals, and methods used for processing II-VI crystals into working detectors.

Reqired Education – Ph.D. degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science or comparable science/engineering field.
