Position Summary

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program solicits applications for a tenure-track faculty position to conduct research, education and outreach related to biomedical engineering with a focus on biomedical imaging. This new faculty member will have a joint appointment in the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) and the appropriate department in the School of Engineering. The BME program ( offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate major as well as doctoral programs in biomedical engineering. It draws its faculty, which includes many internationally renowned researchers, from the School of Engineering as well as the University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC).


Minimum Qualifications: Completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field by time of appointment; research experience in biomedical engineering including but not limited to experimental and/or computational approaches for molecular imaging, functional imaging (e.g., optogenetics, optical, fluorescent, photoacoustic and 1-photon imaging), and genomic imaging; related clinical applications (including those in the field of dental medicine); demonstrated ability to carry out independent research; an outstanding scholarly record of presentations at major conferences as well as publications in leading scientific journals in bioengineering field; and strong oral and written communication skills. Equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with the major funding agencies in the field; experience with proposal development for initiating independent research (for candidates at the assistant professor level); the potential to collaborate with industry; potential to grow in major professional societies; the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team; teaching experience in a classroom setting and in the laboratory; and the ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

Appointment Terms

This is a nine month, tenure track position. Salary and rank will be determined based on qualifications. The anticipated start date is August 23, 2013. The position is intended primarily for a junior faculty member at the Assistant Professor level; however, exceptional candidates with established scholarly and funding records may be considered for a higher level appointment. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus with the possibility of work at UConn's regional campuses across the state.
