Position Summary: The Development Research Institute (DRI) and Africa House are seeking an Assistant Director of Development to create and implement fundraising strategies. As a member of the DRI/Africa House team that annually seeks to achieve fundraising goals in excess of $3 million in major gifts, the Assistant Director will solicit gifts between $250,000 and $25 million.
The Assistant Director of Development will take the lead in creating a comprehensive fundraising plan including donor research, cultivation, solicitation and maintenance; serve as the public face of DRI and Africa House for fundraising activities; identify prospective donors and provide cultivation strategies; and maintain existing relations with DRI and Africa House supporters, while leveraging these relationships to build new contacts with individuals, foundations, corporations, and other sources of support for our activities. He or she will manage a predetermined budget each fiscal year for fundraising activities; prepare forecasts, authorize allocation of funds and approve expenditures; and inform the Directors of Africa House and DRI if costs are likely to exceed budget.
Other responsibilities will include:
**Prepare well-written, high-quality proposals and reports; ensure proper acknowledgement for dedicated gifts; provide follow up correspondence and activity to donor requests.
**Organize and implement fundraising programs and events including receptions, dinners, and award ceremonies.
**Design and implement event standards relative to prospect cultivation and appropriate to gift size for donors and prospects.
**Administer calendar of fundraising events; ensure Deans and University officials are available; organize staffing of events; recruit volunteers and students to assist with events.
**Coordinate fundraising events with School calendars to maximize cultivation activities; serve as liaison between department and administrative offices to develop sponsorship of programs and events to meet fundraising objectives.
**Learn quickly to navigate NYU's official procedures and hierarchies and build relationships within NYU to take advantage of funding opportunities within the University's development and fundraising offices.
**Interact with fundraisers in other programs to share information and promote coordination among contacts with donors.
**Record prospective donor contacts and background data in donor database; prepare background narratives and compilation of donor information.
Qualifications/Required Education: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Education: Master's degree preferred
Required Experience: 5-7 years' relevant experience or equivalent. Must include experience in fundraising, events planning, cultivation and stewardship of donors, and staff supervision.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of international development, development economics, international affairs and/or African development.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to take initiative and collaborate with others.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database and desktop publishing.
