THAT’S LOVELY… BUT WHAT’S THE JOB?
We’re looking for an attorney with a background in contracts and a brain for business development. You will work closely with our VP of Sales and Director of Production, under the guidance of our General Counsel, to negotiate, paper, and close deals in the engaging and enjoyable style our clients have come to expect from us. Essentially, we need a dealmaker – someone who is an amazing negotiator, outrageously meticulous about contract language, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Read on for more specifics …

The responsibilities of the position include:
Working closely with our Vice President of Sales to understand our potential business partners’ needs, budgets and expectations.
Working closely with our Director of Production to scope and price new agency projects, the custom development work we do for primarily Fortune 1000 companies.
Consulting with Operations, Analytics, and other business units as necessary to ensure that all project costs and logistics are being considered as part of the contract negotiation process.
As project specifications and pricing firm up, negotiating NDAs, deal terms and contract language, managing the redline process in ways that protect Jellyvision’s interests while ensuring that negotiations move forward.
Dealing with the contracts for ALEX, our SaaS product that helps employees make better decisions about their benefits packages (www.meetalex.com). These license deals are on our paper, typically much less complex than our agency deals, but come with very high seasonal volume.
Following (and sometimes pushing) deals through to completion, managing the contracting process with an eye towards our anticipated production schedules.
Assisting our General Counsel with corporate compliance, HR, IP protection, occasional litigation or dispute resolution, and general housekeeping issues.
Becoming a student of our industries to ensure that we keep abreast of industry standard approaches and terms, and articulating to clients our reasoning when our contracting approaches diverge from industry standard.
Helping to manage our relationships with existing partners to turn them into repeat customers.
Working with senior management in assessing relevant industries and trends to identify new business opportunities for Jellyvision.
Performing due diligence on prospective partners – briefing team on prospective partners’ financial condition, lines of business, key decision makers, competition and Jellyvision’s competitive positioning.
Providing oversight on our policies and procedures to make sure we’re in compliance with our now decently sized body of contractual obligations.

And we are looking for people who:
Pay meticulous attention to detail. You will be dealing with contracts, lots of contracts. And you will need to have the kind of mind that remembers on page 22 what we said on page 4 – as well as why we said it and how it impacts every other clause in the contract.
Have exceptional negotiating skills. You will be a large part of the engine that gets our business development done. Sales will qualify new business partners and get them talking about what they want and need, and Production will be able to tell you whether we can do what they want, how quickly, and for how much – but you will be the one charged with making the deal happen. So you will need to be an expert at knowing how and when to provide information, ask for information, suggest possibilities, and stand firm on deal-breaking issues, all while being the most enjoyable person a potential client has ever negotiated with.
Are great listeners. Being able to listen and understand the objectives of everyone involved in the negotiation is the key to accurately and efficiently reducing contract negotiations to mutually acceptable contract terms.
Have solid written and oral communication skills. You must be able to effectively and efficiently communicate with both our clients and your coworkers in a way that is clear, concise, and engaging.
Radiate charm like nobody’s business. And we don’t mean smarmy, snake-oil charm. We mean the honest to goodness, we are looking forward to doing business with you, I hope that this is your most enjoyable phone call all day, kind of charm. Being someone who has lived and breathed client service will help.
Possess strong business acumen. You should be the kind of person who enjoys keeping up on trends and happenings in the business world. You will need to understand our clients, our potential clients, and the markets that we work in. You also need to be the kind of person who will see opportunities for Jellyvision in the trends and happenings you learn about.
Are technically savvy. You must be comfortable discussing and understanding the technical issues that impact the production of our products. You don’t need to be an engineer, but you should have a comfort level with, and interest in, the technologies relevant to the interactive communications field.
Exhibit outstanding strategic thinking and problem solving skills. You will have to be able to think strategically and solve problems to make things happen.
Are adaptable. We work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment – both because we are a growing company and because the technologies that we work with change so rapidly. You need to be comfortable with change.
Are able to take a strong stand on justifiable positions. And, conversely, to acknowledge mistakes and move quickly to resolve them.
Know how to collaborate, and also how to lead. You must be skilled at gathering feedback and soliciting opinions, but you also must be able to make decisions.
Are idea people. We are committed to growing this business and are all ears for great ideas about how to improve and evolve our positioning, products, and approaches to market.
Finally, a sense of humor is a must. Yes, even for our lawyers. Interesting or unusual hobbies and tastes in music is a plus.
EXPERIENCE
Approximately five years of experience as a licensed attorney, preferably handling transactional work.
Significant experience negotiating contract terms to close deals.
Experience interacting with clients, especially in a business development capacity.
Experience working with start-up companies and dealing with intellectual property issues preferred, but not required.
Sales or business development experience in a non-legal setting would also be a huge plus.
