University Advancement at Cal Poly oversees the development program areas of planned giving, principal gifts, prospect research, corporate and foundation relations, fundraising, alumni relations, and marketing and communications. Marketing and Communications partners with colleagues in all areas of the university to support communications internally and externally, with a particular focus in strengthening the University's external relations with key constituents such as alumni, donors, potential donors, friends, volunteers, parents, businesses, foundations, media and government and community leaders. Under the general direction of the AVP of Marketing and Communications, and in coordination with the Graphic Designer, the Assistant Graphic Designer will be providing artistic support and will be expected to create a wide range of materials using standard skills and knowledge related to the design, creation and display of visual print, multimedia, electronic materials and web site enhancements.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism. Working knowledge of the principles of artistic and graphic design and illustration including the ability to design, layout and prepare finished artwork to develop a visual product. Knowledge of communications and graphic design theory; experience in graphic art, design and illustration; knowledge of production techniques and progresses; and demonstrated understanding of marketing communications. Working knowledge of the use of color, tone, shading, harmony and perspective drawing. Working knowledge of applicable graphic design, photo editing and desktop publishing software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint or similar software. Ability to effectively use them to create visual material. Working knowledge of web site development software, such as Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash or similar software or experience with content management systems. Demonstrated graphic design skills for print and online publications with knowledge of various design software and interactive technologies including thorough understanding of file formats and peripheral software (e.g. printing, scanning, film recording) and working knowledge of graphics delivery and implementation software. General knowledge of the principles of print design, typeface, color, layout, and production techniques. Ability to work in a variety of multi-media formats including audio, video, and web site design with an understanding of the processes and techniques involved. Demonstrated understanding of various communication vehicles and methods. Basic knowledge of copyright laws, especially relating to creative properties and the use of graphic and textual materials. General knowledge of media and social networking sites (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Ability to present both electronic (web) and print communications. Demonstrated ability to understand communication goals. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email. Exercise sound judgment and discretion while using standard procedures and protocols in the completion of assignments and projects. Consult with originators to ensure communication objectives are achieved. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Special Conditions (Staff)
***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED*** Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development. Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business. This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
