Assistant Manager of Library Operations

Job Summary: Under supervision of the manager of library operations, assists with the planning, organizing and managing operations of a community library; may supervise staff and volunteers.
Essential Job Functions: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)
Provides excellent customer service.
Performs all job functions of a librarian within the library.
Under supervision of the manager of library operations, assists in the supervision of the day-to-day operations and staff of a community library to ensure efficient public service; interprets policy and procedures; resolves daily operational problems.
Carries out supervisory responsibility as assigned in accordance with policies, procedures and applicable laws including: training in job skills; planning, assigning and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
As assigned and under the supervision of the manager of library operations, assists in recruiting, interviewing and selecting agency personnel and appraising performance of staff.
Interprets Library resources, policies and procedures to customers; provides public service to customers.
Evaluates the Library's collection in consultation with the materials selection office; provides suggestions and input to the materials selection office for purchases of materials; accepts and discusses citizen consideration of materials requests with customers before sending them to the materials selection office.
Uses broad and comprehensive knowledge of current library theories and practices to provide modern services.
May assist the manager of library operations in the preparation of annual budget requests on the basis of the personnel, services, equipment and materials needed to provide Library services; monitors adherence to assigned budget items or accounts.
As assigned, promotes Library use within the service area by continuing communications with community agencies, clubs, organizations and groups; speaks to such groups about Library programs and activities.
Responds to customer complaints; trouble-shoots and resolves problems; answers the more difficult, technical or reference questions; performs readers' advisory work to assist customers in the selection of books and other materials.
As assigned, prepares reports and directs the maintenance of statistics to evaluate services on a regular basis.
Attends meetings as assigned and relays information to staff.
Consults with the manager of library operations regarding areas of concern and recommends changes as needed.
Directs the use of Library meeting rooms as assigned.
Maintains professional awareness of current events, related developments and trends through reading professional literature and participating in professional associations and continuing education.
Works in a manner safe to the individual and other people; follows safety rules and safe working practices; uses safety equipment as required.
Defends the principles of the Citizen's Bill of Library Rights, the Freedom to Read Statement, the privacy of Library users' records and the code of professional ethics.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Salary & Hours: Minimum starting salary of $48,214.40 per year. Must be available all hours the library is open including evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. This position is overtime exempt.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) or a Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) required ; and at least one year of management experience is preferred.
