Job Description:

The Long Island Center of SUNY Empire State College is seeking a full-time faculty member in Community and Human Services, with interdisciplinary expertise in related areas. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in her/his area(s) of expertise and be a generalist able to design and guide independent and group studies in a wide variety of areas. The role of faculty mentor entails mentoring students on a one-to-one basis, in group learning settings, and in blended learning formats, reviewing work regularly with students, and providing formative and summative evaluations of students’ work. It also entails working collaboratively with colleagues at the center level and college-wide, and offers the opportunity for some on-line teaching through the Center for Distance Learning, as well as work in the Graduate Programs.

The Long Island Center serves approximately 1,200 students annually out of three offices. Our central office is in Old Westbury, NY. Our two units are located in Hauppauge and Riverhead. Working closely with faculty and staff across the center, the role of the faculty member is to provide high-quality educational services to students and to enhance the college’s reputation within the community. Involvement in college governance is also expected.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited US university or comparable non-US university is required in Social Welfare, Counseling, or a closely related field. Successful candidates must have the potential to effectively mentor and teach adults from diverse backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participate actively in institutional development, and pursue scholarly interests. Successful candidates will also have strong communication and computer skills, and effective organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong preference will be accorded candidates who demonstrate knowledge of adult learning, individualized and interdisciplinary programs, learning technologies and online pedagogies, and innovative program delivery, as well as demonstrated commitment to diversity issues, either in higher education or through community-based work.

Special Information:

Regular travel will be required to fulfill center and college-wide commitments. Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
