The Office of the General Counsel at the University of Delaware wishes to hire an Associate General Counsel. Salary and benefits are competitive with those offered by other leading nonprofit organizations. This position reports to the Vice President and General Counsel.

The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel was created in 2009 and consists of three attorneys: the Vice President and General Counsel, the Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, and the Associate General Counsel. The Office handles the full range of legal issues for the University, including academic freedom and tenure issues, labor and employment, transactional law, contract drafting and review, and the application and interpretation of pertinent federal and state laws and regulations. The Associate General Counsel will perform a wide range of legal assignments under the supervision of the Vice President and General Counsel and the Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. He or she will:
  • Provide independent legal advice, counsel and assistance to University clients in diverse areas including labor and employment law, student disciplinary matters, tax and benefits, contract law, ongoing litigation, affirmative action, and compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Act as the Office's liaison with other areas as assigned by the Vice President and General Counsel.
  • Provide advice, formulate courses of action, draft correspondence, draft policies and procedures, and counsel various University officials to resolve legal, procedural and administrative issues and ensure compliance with all applicable legal requirements.
  • Assist in conducting internal investigations and formal inquiries.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to remain current on the laws and regulations governing the assigned areas.
  • Undertake projects relevant to the law and its impact on the operations of the University, as requested by the General Counsel.
  • J.D. degree from an accredited American law school and at least seven years of experience as a practicing lawyer. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have at least five years of experience providing legal representation to colleges or universities either as an attorney in an in-house college or university legal office or as outside counsel in a law firm, attorney general's office, or system office providing legal counsel to higher education clients.
  • Admission to practice law in Delaware or eligibility for limited admission to the Delaware Bar under the in-house counsel rule (Delaware Supreme Court Rule 55.1). Full admission to the Delaware Bar preferred.
  • A record of academic success as an undergraduate and law school student.
  • Strong legal research, writing and advocacy skills.
  • Sound legal and practical judgment.
  • Enthusiasm for university life, and the confidence necessary to engage with high-level administrative and academic officials in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including listening and verbal communication skills.
