The Performing Arts Center (PAC) consists of three venues: a 1282-seat concert hall, a 180-seat recital hall and a 350-seat rehearsal/performance pavilion. It hosts events including symphonies, choral concerts, contemporary and pop music events, plays and other theatrical events, dance programs, recitals, opera and light opera, touring shows and community productions. It also supports other uses, including workshops, business meetings, banquets, recording sessions, trade shows, conferences, receptions, funerals, art exhibits, church services, weddings, etc.
This position coordinates and supervises technical requirements for all events in the Center. This includes day-to-day coordination of stage use and the employees required to execute events. When requested, this position may coordinate technical services for university events in other campus venues. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Managing Director with marked independence and authority for carrying out the supervision of the stage to ensure proper use of technical equipment and emphasis on the safety of all involved. Additional responsibilities include inventory, physical plant, major equipment maintenance & repair, disaster recovery and computers & phones.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only)
Bachelor's degree in theatre arts or a related field; five to eight years technical theatre experience performed at a management level.
Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
Knowledge of technical theatre and stage management techniques, including lighting & sound plots, stage sets & drawings, rigging & ground plans.
Thorough knowledge of safety rules & practices pertaining to backstage theatre work; ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes & regulations.
Knowledge of and ability to skillfully use various types of state-of-the-art theatrical equipment & materials.
Strong organizational, administrative, leadership and staff supervisory skills.
Demonstrated managerial experience, including responsibility for recruitment, hiring, evaluation and disciplinary actions.
Strong conflict management skills and ability to solve problems, set goals, negotiate, compromise, settle personality differences and resolve conflicts.
Ability to initiate, establish and foster teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere with employees and visiting clients; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Ability to exercise initiative and good judgment.
Knowledge of basic budgeting principles; ability to monitor and track assigned budgets.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Demonstrated ability to prepare, record and report finances for a technical services department and realize balance budgets.
Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email; ability to maintain production records, budgets and financial records.
Familiarity with the needs of facility management.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Ability to push/pull/carry/lift and/or shift materials and equipment weighing 10 to 50 lbs; ability to climb ladders and stairs to reach overhead or remote areas.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work varying and additional hours, including necessary evenings and weekends and organize complex technical setups under stress and within pressing deadlines.
Must be able to perform work requiring physical strength, dexterity and endurance.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
