DESCRIPTION:
Individual contributor responsible for merchandising and buying for small product line or directly supporting senior merchandising members to develop product plan in accordance with the season's strategy in a specific product category. May assume responsibility for a category of his or her own. Researches customer trends and product history. Researches competitive intelligence and fashion trends. Participates in the patterning process. Analyzes of sales, margins, inventories and markdowns. May collaborate with manufacturing on vendor issues, calendar and costing strategies. May participate in plans for ad campaigns and merchandise presentations. Works under general direction and handles issues of moderate complexity. Typically reports to Merchandising Manager. May be assigned an Assistant. Partners with the Buyer in developing a line plan that represents the Brand and is aligned with the seasonal merchandise strategy

  • Incorporates competitive intelligence, customer intimacy, fashion radar and business analysis to
achieve volume and profit goals
  • May assume full responsibility for merchandise category or department to deliver or exceed volume
and profit goals
  • May indirectly supervise and coach the Assistant Merchant to achieve performance objectives
RESPONSIBILITIES:
BUILDS REVENUE
  • Understands the Brand target customer by tracking and experiencing customer attitude and lifestyle
and selecting product that appeals to the customer's taste
  • Works with the Buyer to understand the competition through patterning activities that require
shopping and conducting regular scans of benchmark competitors to identify opportunities and
challenges for in-season business and future season line planning
  • Partners with Buyer and Merchandise Planning and Allocation to ensure seasonal line plan utilizes
historical performance and current business data
  • Develops and presents line plan to Buyer for merchandise category or department to achieve
financial goals
  • Manages in-season business by tracking and analyzing sales information in order to identify
opportunities to increase sales, improve margins, maximize inventories and decrease markdowns

BUILDS TALENT
  • Actively participates in the selection, on-boarding and development of Assistant Merchants
  • Serves as a resource and mentor to new associates
BUILDS ORGANIZATIONAL CAPABILITY
  • Works together with Merchandise Planning and Allocation to select key items and develop a
seasonal plan that utilizes historical performance and current business data
  • Collaborates with Production and Sourcing on vendor resource, calendar, and costing strategies to
facilitate production planning
  • Visits stores regularly in order to proactively solicit feedback from customers and sales associates
  • Acts as a customer representative to report on quality, fit and construction issues to Production and
Sourcing
  • Works with Merchandise Manager and Merchandising counterparts to ensure that a cohesive
viewpoint transcends departmental lines
  • Contributes to Merchandise Process Redesign objectives by continually enhancing strong
partnerships with Merchandise Planning and Allocation, Design, Production and Sourcing and
Marketing.
  • Shares customer and market perspective with Design and stays current on fashion trends
  • Provides Marketing, Visual Merchandising and Stores with product knowledge and serves as an
informational resource
  • Acts as a customer representative to report on quality, fit and construction issues
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • At least 4 years merchandising experience
  • Strong understanding of vertically integrated retail operations
  • Successful track record for high volume business growth and bottom line results
  • Broad-based business acumen with the potential to grow to the Merchant level
  • High intelligence with a true entrepreneurial risk mentality, strong analytical and strategic thinking

  • Acute fashion sense with proven talent to envision and interpret fashion trends
