Control Systems Engineering

Department Overview

KBR’s Control Systems Engineering (CSE) Department is looking for engineers that desire opportunities to grow and learn process control and instrumentation. KBR will provide basic process control training for college graduates to become CSE engineers from those selected per the requirements below. Under direct supervision, the CSE engineer performs assignments requiring knowledge and skills of basic electrical, chemical and some mechanical engineering principles; uses sound principles and practical judgment in making selections and adaptation of engineering alternatives; performs specific and well-defined tasks.

Job Summary

Control Systems Engineers (CSE) are responsible for design, specification, requisitioning and services related to control systems including basic process control systems, safety instrumented systems, analyzer systems, machinery monitoring systems, compressor anti-surge systems, telecommunication systems, control panels, field instrumentation, valves, and much more.

CSE Engineer projects:
The KBR engineer works on projects that provide the design and details for construction of upstream processes (offshore gas/oil platforms, LNG liquefaction processes, gas-to-liquid processes), downstream refinery and related processes, chemical processes related to petroleum byproducts, ammonia, power plants, and various other related processes.

These projects range from conceptual design studies, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC), grass roots, revamp, de-bottlenecking, and upgrades.

Most are large projects (up to several billion dollars) that typically requires several years to complete.

KBR CSE typical tasks include:
1. Specify and requisition the field instruments that accurately measure process parameters (pressure, temperature, level, flow, analyzer, etc.), and the control valves that manipulate the processes.

These process instruments must smoothly control the process and ensure high quality products.

There are literally thousands of different types of field instruments available from which to choose from a simple pressure or temperature gauge to complex process analyzers costing over $100,000, or custody flow meters that can cost over $1 million.

Large automated valves can cost well over $1 million.


Develop the process control strategies and document them on the Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID). Work with the Process Engineer, client representatives, and other project team members to identify the process parameters and technical requirements of the processes.

Write and issues the control philosophy document, complex control narrative, and other project narratives. Some complex control algorithms the CSE engineer develops include: a) multi-pass flow balancing through a large industrial fired heater to control process flow rates, discharge temperature rates, fuel gas/oil flow rates, and fuel air flow rates; b) anti-surge control algorithms of a large multi-million dollar centrifugal compressor with more than a dozen significant process parameter inputs; c) complex analyzer control algorithms using on-line process gas chromatographs or mass spectrometers; d) accurate 3-mode level control of a large high pressure industrial boiler; and many other similar complex control schemes.

3. Specify and manage the complex multi million dollar microprocessor based control and safety instrumented systems.

Write the complex specifications and perform the bid reviews to qualify and select the Main Automation Contractor (MAC).

Then manage the MAC throughout the project to ensure all project requirements are correctly fabricated, assembled, programmed, tested, delivered, installed and started up at site.

4. Participate in many of the detailed requirements throughout the project which include creating the cause and effect diagrams, logic narratives, logic diagrams, instrument and vessel sketches. Perform the calculations to size instruments and valves, safety probability calculations, thermowell vibration calculations, Foundation Fieldbus segment design calculations, Intrinsic Safety limitation calculations, and level calibration calculations. Provide special installation designs for complex instrumentation. Provide design of walk-in enclosed analyzer shelters and walk-in shelters for the control systems located within the processing units.

5. The CSE engineer continues to learn throughout his/her career as a result of instrumentation technological improvements growing at an accelerating pace.

Participate in supplier technology exhibits, trade magazines, seminars, Lunch and Learn presentations, and directly one-on-one with suppliers.




Bachelor Science degree in Engineering preferably Electrical and Chemical Engineering. Some Mechanical Engineering candidates will be considered.

Excellent Communication Skills, (written and verbal)
