This is a supervisory position in benefits programs. The employee supervises Benefit Program Specialists, determining eligibility for government assistance programs. The supervisor trains, leads, and develops staff and monitors how cases are managed. In Craig County DSS this supervisory positon also carries a benefits caseload. Activities of the supervisor include, but are not limited to: Ensuring that cases are managed properly and that high quality services are delivered. Making casework assignments to the supervisees. Making recommendations and instituting same for maintaining and improving program and departmental wide efficiency and effectiveness. The supervisor participates in the hiring, evaluation, discipline and termination of staff they supervise. Written records of supervisee performance are mainained. The supervisor stays abreast of program changes and relays changes to affected staff. The supervisor will meet with others in the community to provide outreach, education and coordination of services as necessary. Program performance statistics and costs are monitored. Reports are prepared periodically and as required. The supervisor may act for the director as designated.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in the human services field and human services program experience in a lead or supervisory capacity OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge- Considerable knowledge of: current social, economic and health issues and trends; principles and practices of effective supervision; public assistance programs, policies and regulations; the literature in the field of eligibility determination; casework supervision principles and practices; and effective interviewing techniques. Working knowledge of computer systems and standard office software to include the state Department of Social Services human services systems.

Skills- Skill in operating a personal computer and the associated office and agency software.

Abilities- Demonstrated ability to: work effectively with others; work independently supervising and training others to deal effectively with the public; plan and manage work effectively; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; interpret laws, policies, and regulations and to make decisions based thereon; plan and supervise work activities, including service delivery, training, recordkeeping duties and organizational operations; develop and maintain good working relations with internal and external customers; and evaluate financial assistance programs.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer work experience in benefit programs operated by the Virgina Department of Social Services.

Special Requirements
Shelter duty may be required during community disasters and/or emergencies.
