The YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago is currently recruiting for the open position of BILINGUAL CHILD COUNSELOR / THERAPIST, an exempt, full-time position at the YWCA’s SVSS Rise Children’s Center Program. The incumbent will report to the Clinical Coordinator, but will not have supervisory responsibilities. The hiring salary is $34,500. The RISE Children’s Center is located in Chicago in the West Loop area.
SUMMARY: The Bilingual Counselor/Therapist is responsible for providing crisis intervention for individual, family and group counseling to the child/adolescent victims of sexual abuse or sexual assault, and also for their non-offending parents/guardians and/or significant others.
POSITION CHALLENGES: This position is demanding in terms of child victim needs and also the needs of family members. Victims may ranges from ages three to adolescents up to seventeen years of age. The Bilingual Counselor/Therapist must be able to deal well with distressed and traumatized children and families. The Bilingual Counselor/Therapist may be asked to assume public speaking responsibilities that are specific to SVSS Child Counseling programming and public policy issues, and may also carry representative responsibilities to other groups, agencies, and organizations. The bilingual Counselor/Therapist may find it necessary to work evenings and Saturdays according to victim needs. If so, the flexibility in scheduling is required. The bilingual Counselor/Therapist also may facilitate support groups for child/adolescent sexual assault/abuse victims and/or their significant others.
• At minimum, two years of experience in counseling or crisis intervention are required.
• A Bilingual Counselor/Therapist who works with the Spanish-speaking community must demonstrate cultural competency with the Hispanic/Latino community and fluency in both English and Spanish (spoken and written).
• Prior experience providing counseling to sexually traumatized children utilizing play/art therapy is preferred.
• Effective inter-personal, and oral and written communication skills are required
• Well developed collaborative abilities are required to work with members of the RISE Children's Counseling team.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: At minimum, a Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or art therapy is required.
LICENSURE: A holder of a Master's degree should be licensed, or working toward becoming licensed. (Illinois Department of Professional Regulation Licensure as: LPC, LCPC, LSW or LCSW.)
CERTIFICATIONS: A newly hired Bilingual Counselor/Therapist must complete ICASA's forty-hour sexual assault training within three months of hire if not completed within the prior twelve months, and an additional sixty hours of child-specific sexual abuse/assault training within the first year of hire.
