This position is responsible for directing and coordinating a comprehensive biological safety and surety program at the MRIGlobal Facility. This position works with the MRIGlobal Security Office to facilitate a comprehensive Biosecurity program. Responsible for compliance with existing and developing standards and regulations issued by federal, state and municipal agencies, such as CDC, USDA, NIH, DHS, and DOD. Includes close cooperation and interaction with MRIGlobal biosafety personnel and committees. Provides guidance and consultation to assess the risk of working with various pathogens.
The Biosafety/BioSurety Officer reports directly to the Manager, BioSafety/BioSurety. Primary duties include but are not limited to:
Assist in the day to day operations of biosafety/biosurety program in the MRIGlobal-KC facility, project review, biosafety training, facility inspections, and advising staff on biosafety matters.
This position also serves as the Responsible Official (RO) for the CDC/USDA Select Agent Program for the facility and point of contact for all matters related to CDC/USDA/ DOD registration and subsequent compliance with the regulations.
Responsible for ensuring compliance with the safety procedures of these regulations, including the implementation of safety and emergency response plans.
Client accountabilities specific to this position:
Assists technical staff in the preparation of proposals and project-specific biosafety and biosurety plans.
Ensures that project biosafety and biosurety requirements specified by clients are achieved.
Communicates with internal and external clients to ensure program and facility meets compliance with regulations.
Ensures the MRIGlobal-KC Facility complies with applicable DOT, DHS, DOD, CDC, and USDA regulations.
Provides biosafety training to technical staff, visitors, and contractors.
Interfaces with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee on issues and procedures related to biological safety.
Provides technical assistance and acts as a conduit for information to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and researchers on laboratory containment and safety procedures related to bio hazardous materials.
Internal Process accountabilities specific to this position:
Assists with the development and implementation of the biosafety, biosecurity and biosurety programs.
Serves as the Biological Safety Officer at the MRIGlobal-KC facility.
Serves as the Responsible Official for (RO) CDC/USDA Select Agent regulations at the MRIGlobal-KC facility.
Serves as a resource for all biosafety, biosecurity and biosurety issues for MRIGlobal-KC.
Conducts risk assessments for use of biohazardous materials in laboratory operations.
Assists with the day to day operations of the biosafety/biosurety program. Keeps Manager, BioSafety/BioSurety informed of any apparent incidents or deficiencies relating to the program.
Ensures that biosafety-related equipment is inspected and/or certified as appropriate and coordinates preventive maintenance for containment laboratories.
Assists in the development of Safety Plans for laboratory compliance with Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) and NIH Guidelines. This may include an emergency response plan, a natural disaster plan, a record management system, a system of inspection, a theft, loss, or release notification procedure, and a system of administrative review of adverse actions, and application submission requirements for approved users.
Conducts job biosafety analysis and hazard surveys in laboratories.
Serves a member on the on the MRIGlobal Safety & Health Committee and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
Oversees procedures and protocols related to disposal of waste generated from research activities.
Perform site inspections to assess compliance with biosafety and biosurety program requirements.
Success Factors:
Personal computer experience, with working knowledge of Windows-based software.
Working knowledge of the DOT regulations as they relate to shipment of etiological materials; CDC and USDA regulations as they relate to biosafety containment, disease epidemiology, and biosafety techniques; and DOD regulations related to Biosurety and biosecurity.
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with the ability to work with office staff, researchers, facilities design and maintenance personnel, laboratory technical staff, outside contractors, and government agencies.
Ability to stand, walk and sit for prolong periods of time, lift or carry up to up to 50 pounds and capable of wearing a respiratory protection, including SCBA.
Ability to obtain U.S. Government security clearances.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, virology, genetics, molecular biology, public health, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field with a minimum of 4 years biosafety experience in a laboratory environment.
Preferred:
Master's degree in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, public health, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field with a minimum of 2 years biosafety experience in a laboratory environment.
Experience with biosurety/biosecurity regulations. board certification in Industrial Hygiene or Certified Biosafety Professional.
