Ke`aki Technologies has an exciting opportunity for a Biological Science Laboratory Technician working in the Virology Division of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. Candidates must be US Citizens.
The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland conducts basic and applied research to develop products, information, procedures, strategies, and training programs, and provides for medical defense against biological threats and naturally occurring infectious diseases of military significance that require bio-containment.
The Virology Division conducts research to define molecular and biological characteristics of viruses and to understand the pathogenesis and host immune response. These studies lead to development and evaluation of prophylactic and therapeutic measures for viral diseases of military importance.
The Biological Science Laboratory Technician will provide research technical support for the Viral Therapeutics Branch, Virology Division. Specific tasks include:
Perform experiments as instructed with mice.
Perform inoculations of mice with virus and / or drug / or other material as needed.
Perform euthanasia and necropsy of mice, and collect tissue for processing.
Conduct bleeding of mice.
Perform experiments as instructed with guinea pigs.
Perform inoculation of guinea pigs with virus and or drug / and / or other material as needed.
Perform euthanasia and necropsy of guinea pig – including collection of tissues for processing.
Assist in handling and monitoring of nonhuman primates.
Perform bleeding and inoculations of nonhuman primates.
Perform CBC, general chemistries, coagulation assays and other clinical laboratory based assays on samples from animals.
Assist in preparation of material from animals for various assays.
Perform basic cell culture, plaque assays, PCR and other assays as needed to support animal studies.
Position requires a BS degree in a related field
Minimum 2-3 years of laboratory experience
Special Immunization Program is required
Hearing Conservation Program is required
Enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) for handling select agents - he or she must maintain enrollment. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements as regulated by Army Regulation 50-1 (AR 50-1).
Work in a Biosafety Level 3 and 4 (BSL 3/4) laboratory is a requirement. In order to safely carry out the laboratory research mission, certain FDA licensed vaccines will be required to be taken by personnel accessing a BSL-2, -3 or -4 laboratories, or at risk for exposure to biologically hazardous material in the course of normal work performance.
