SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking to fill a biologist position with experience in conducting field work, technical writing and agency coordination. This exciting position will be a mix of field and office work, depending on project type. Project work could include land development, power transmission, transportation and work with agencies like the BLM, BIA, and US Forest Service. Experience interacting with clients, as well as proposal and budget preparation is preferred, though not required.
This position is a regular, full-time hourly position. Pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience. It is anticipated that moderate travel, including overnight, will be required for the position. Fieldwork will be primarily in Arizona. Depending on projects, a per diem may also be provided in addition to base pay.
Fieldwork, technical writing, report preparation, and agency coordination
Coordinate and complete biological surveys, including collecting data concerning sensitive wildlife and habitats of the desert southwest
Supervise field crews, as needed
Interact with clients in the office and field
Take initiative and resolve issues to assure client needs are met effectively
Maintain high-quality field data and enter information into a database for later interpretation
Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork
Photograph appropriate habitat, species, and landforms, and collection and other procedures
Operate SWCA vehicles in a safe manner, during on and off-road conditions. Notifying appropriate person when vehicle requires maintenance
Work closely with SWCA’s other resource scientists, managers and directors in both natural and cultural resources throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values
Willingness to learn and grow into increased project-management responsibilities
Bachelor’s Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related field required
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience completing biological surveys/fieldwork
Demonstrated experience in preparing technical documents
Experience with desert southwest plants and wildlife is preferred
Strong interest in consulting, NEPA planning and business development preferred
Possess an understanding and interest in consulting and client business relationships related to a for-profit environmental firm
Candidates must be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10-miles a day in rugged terrain, while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds as needed
The successful candidate should have flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, ability to try new, improved techniques, make independent decisions when appropriate to the situation and make adjustments as a member of a team in order to complete tasks in the most efficient and accurate manner
