Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Department of Oceanography, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Assists in a project examining the efficacy of deep water marine protected areas (MPAs) and the ecology of associated fishes. The MPAs are located in the Main Hawaiian Islands below conventional SCUBA depths (100-400m). This project uses non-extractive baited camera techniques to obtain video of commercially valuable bottomfishes in and out of the MPAs where fishing is prohibited. Analyzes this video to extract data on the abundance and sizes of bottomfishes for statistical analysis. Also participates in some field work.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Zoology, Biology, Oceanography, or a related field. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge and experience in fish biology and fish identification. Ability to use standard computer software used in science such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, statistical programs, e-mail, and internet access programs. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to participate in field operations aboard small boats in sometimes rough sea conditions. Able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Wide range of experience in fish biology and the use of databases. Knowledge of broad range of laboratory techniques and how to operate laboratory equipment. Some GIS computer experience.
