Responsible for ensuring appropriate actual and budget product cost standards and policies are set. Assist the Controller in coordinating the annual operating budgeting process and in collaboration with Operations Analysis group is specifically responsible for budgeting costs related to manufacturing / product costs and the generation of budgeted rates for material and conversion costs to be used in actual product standard costs. Coordinates the monthly update of product cost standards, reviews of production order variances, ongoing audits of policies, and inventory valuation. Acts as the "super-user" for SAP and other related systems related to product costs, standards and production order processes and works with IT in order to continually enhance our system capabilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Policies & Procedures

Formalize corporate cost accounting policies and procedures to ensure both understanding and compliance by the sales divisions and operations. Obtain agreement from procurement, plants, master data, financial operations, etc. in order to develop the best practices and procedures. Evaluate policies/procedures on an ongoing basis to determine if any changes are warranted. These policies and procedures should include all components of raw material and conversion costs. Examples include, but are not limited to, how trim is handled/valued, the development of standards in the year of the start up of a new line, six run rule scope, assessments, etc.

Responsible for setting and implementing audit procedures to:
  • ensure accuracy of manufacturing and product costs. Activities include but are not limited to:
  • Audit and/or maintain accuracy of all component costs of raw materials to be certain they correspond to current costs paid for the product for actual and budget. Trim values/usage should also be included.
  • Audit and/or maintain accuracy of assumptions used for manufacturing costs. Examples include set up time, meeting time, support, etc.
  • Develop and maintain a process to be used for setting the standards for new line start ups.
  • ensure accuracy of inventory values including analyses of invoice price for actual raw material purchases. Confirm moving average values are correct.
Ongoing Updates/Reporting

Oversee the monthly and yearly updates to product cost standards

Coordinate preparation of the monthly Procurement Savings Report.

Prepare periodic reports to the sales divisions providing the estimated impact on product costs of known cost changes from suppliers that have or will take effect during the year but will not impact the product cost standards until the next budget cycle.

Responsible to set up new product costs in SAP as well as determining the costs are accurate and adhere to current policies/standards.

Responsible for the set up of internal orders and the cost reporting for plant trials.

Annual Budget Process

Coordinate the annual budgeting process related to all product and manufacturing costs as well as participate in some aspects of the non-manufacturing budget. Make certain that the budgeted standards adhere to current policies. Work with procurement on setting cheese costs including freight and other cost components for the budget; master data for the BOMS/Routings; and the Operations Analysis group for plant operational costs. Is an expert in how the system, SAP and BPC, processes work in relation to calculating the budget. Maintains systems/processes as well as optimizes the budget process, maintains and optimizes BPC input templates and data flow between SAP and BPC, and maintains the budget calendar. Assists the Controller in preparation and coordination of non-manufacturing budgets as well.

"Super User" for SAP and other Applications

Maintain a high level of knowledge in SAP/BPC and other applications in order to continually improve current system usage related to cost accounting, production order process and budget process. This should include understanding standards and the movement of data throughout the system for setting standards, maintain standards and for actual data hitting the system. In addition:
  • Be the "super user" and go to person for IT. Work closely with IT to review and implement enhancements/improvements.
  • Continued involvement in User Groups and/or other avenues to remain abreast of current system capabilities.
  • Evaluate management reporting capabilities within SAP related to production orders, cost center expenses, and labor and equipment utilization.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Analysis Team to determine system needs.
  • Work with IT to educate users on changes made to systems.

Responsible for continuous improvements related to budgeting, standard setting, the use of SAP and BPC, and other cost accounting related tasks.

Maintain an understanding of the manufacturing processes for all lines at all plants by periodically observing the lines during production runs.

Evaluate and ensure appropriate reconciliations are performed of inventory stored at third party warehouses.

Facilitate / perform required analyses related to the year-end financial audit.

Act as a resource to others with questions related to standard costs and production orders.

Work closely with the Operations Analysis Team in order to develop the most efficient and effective processes, procedures, data capturing and data sharing mechanisms.

Prepares the uniform capitalization calculation annually for the Tax Director.


Directly supervises one employee in the Accounting Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Bachelor's degree and eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with SAP in a manufacturing environment with strong knowledge of standard costing and actual cost inputs is required. May consider strong experience with a different ERP system with similar complexity to SAP. CPA or CMA certificate preferred.


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.


Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.


Extensive spreadsheet, database, and word processing skills and experience with a fully integrated business system. Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work in a team environment.


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
