The Montana State University Library serves as a vital and dynamic resource for the Montana State University campus community. We are looking for a software developer to join our growing digital services team. Our team works on digitization, technology, and development; it comprises full-time staff responsible for digitization operations, IT services, library systems, web development, software development, and project management. At the direction of the Head of the Digital Access and Web Services Team, and working closely with other members of the Library Systems team, the Computer Software Engineer/System I will play a primary role in designing and implementing the software layers to support MSU's digital library services. The current workload for the team includes: improving user experience across diverse services, mass reformatting operations, developing new software and services for our community, and working more and more with diverse data and digital collections. Specific duties of the position include:
Gather requirements and develop specifications for digital library projects, working closely with digital object creators and managers to understand their needs.
Design, program, test, and deploy those projects. Evaluate, and recommend potential toolkits and open source applications for inclusion in the technology stack.
Collaborate with the Library Systems team as well as Campus-wide Computing Services, especially with staff focusing on software development and storage administration.
Maintain digital library architecture, troubleshooting issues whenever they arise. Maintain awareness of community-wide developments in the realm of digital library software and infrastructure.
Write and maintain documentation for overall architecture and code. Supervise programming projects. Serve on the Digital Content Group.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Library Science or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Demonstrated experience working in LAMP (Linux/shell, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl) environments.
Demonstrated experience with SQL database environments and familiarity with information retrieval systems like Lucene/Solr.
Demonstrated experience in using, applying, and crosswalking metadata and migrating multiple data formats into new systems.
Demonstrated experience in using common web standards (XML, JSON) in making data available openly.
Demonstrated understanding of REST web services and using APIs for programming.
Demonstrated excellent communication and writing skills, especially when discussing technical work with non-technical people.
Experience with software development version-control systems (Git)
Experience with Java web services (Tomcat);
Experience with project management.
