Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) and John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


DUTIES: Responsible for cage washing activities to sanitize cages and accessories at a centralized biomedical animal research facility. Operate heavy equipment, to include rack, cage, or tunnel washer; vacuum bedding dispensing and disposal system, autoclave, and bottle filling station. Prepare sufficient clean caging in a timely manner to supply the animal rooms for the animal care staff. Carcass disposal using the alkaline hydrolysis unit. Responsible for preventive maintenance and simple troubleshooting of heavy equipment. Assist with room disinfection using physical or chemical methods. This is a progression job, beginning with an entry level (Level I). Subsequent progression to Level II depends on demonstrated competence, meeting qualification requirements, and operational needs.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months to one (1) year of progressive experience in an animal resource or commercial kitchen dishwashing setting. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of simple math such as adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division. Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and maintain equipment used on a regular basis. Knowledge of cage rack systems. Have basic writing skills and be able to complete simple forms pertaining to the cage wash operations. Able to apply basic math skills as described under knowledge. Able to do simple problem-solving using skills received on the job. Have basic computer skills and be able to send electronic mail. Able to safely and effectively dismantle and disinfect cage rack systems as needed. Able to reassemble cage rack systems as required. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to obtain clearance by the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigations Security Risk Assessment as requested by the Director of Animal and Veterinary Services. Clearance is required every five (5) years. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to manually lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Requires no obvious allergies to the lab animal environment. Must not have any obvious allergies to rabbits or rodents. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Pass a post offer physical exam and provide proof of a tetanus immunization within six (6) months of hire. Subsequent periodic exams may be required by the employer. Respirator medical clearance and fitting is required. All reasonable accommodations will be made based on fitness for duty. Medical costs will be paid for by the employer. Employment is contingent upon agreeing to receive any prophylactic immunizations that are made available by the department for related hazardous projects.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Formal coursework or job training involving animal husbandry, especially those used for animal biomedical research. Formal coursework or job training involving the regulations involving the use of animals for biomedical research. Able to supervise students or non-technical employees. Some knowledge of constructing, maintaining, and repair of cages and equipment, or equivalent experience. Previous experience in operating heavy equipment such as autoclave, cage wash equipment, and alkaline hydrolysis unit.
