Responsible for rail car inspection, cleaning and maintenance in accordance with customer, Company, FRA and AAR guidelines and/or regulations. Must ensure that all company policies and procedures are followed, and that all safety rules are enforced when performing duties.
Must have a valid drivers license as position requires operation of company vehicles
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Repair and maintenance of boxcar interior includes but is not limited to removal of all trash and debris from interior, removal of broken floor boards, inspection of interior, moving of load dividers, and lifting of floor panels (team lift only) to remove trash as needed from under floor panels, repairing of floor panels, walls and ceilings and washing of interiors to remove mold.
Repair and maintenance of boxcar exterior includes but is not limited to inspection and repair of box car doors and body, inspection of fuel tanks, including removal and installation of fuel tanks.
To safely and efficiently perform carman duties, employees will be required to:
1. Use cutting torch in all positions with out damage to adjoining parts.
2. Operate a forklift.
3. Ensure that all federal requirements and company guidelines are met, and that all safety rules are followed when performing duties.
4. Operate a commercial pressure washer.
5. Operate an arc welder and oxy-acetylene torch.
6. Have working knowledge of basic power and hand tools.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school education or general education (GED) or 3 to 6 months job-related experience; or equivalent of education and experience.
Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb ladders and/or cars 30% of time.
Must be able to stand and walk 100% of time.
Must be able to hear well enough to distinguish warning sounds or verbal instructions above loud noises 100% of time.
Must be able to reach with hands and arms and or use fingers 100% of time.
Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift at all times.
Inspection of rail car doors will require employee to open, close, and adjust doors. Employee will be required to reach overhead, pull, and use tools to adjust doors to proper operating conditions.
Inspections of fuel tanks will require employee to bend, kneel, squat and crawl under box cars to tighten bolts, weld, inspect fuel tank crossovers and purge tanks as needed.
The position requires constant daily bending, lifting up to 75 pounds and occasionally in excess of 100 pounds, climbing of ladders and sill steps, squatting, and kneeling on a repetitive basis.
The employee is regularly required to exert up to 75 pounds of force; and/or up to 100 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to loud noise, moving machinery parts, outdoor weather conditions and elements, airborne particles and fumes from gas, oil, and grease, welding arcs: and/or frequently exposed to tools and machinery that can cause burns if not used properly.
