Duties And Responsibilities

& Minimum Requirements:
Chief Engineer performs supervision of the 24-hour operation of Georgetown University’s Utility Plant, which provides efficient and uninterrupted heating and cooling for physical facilities of the campus and hospital:

Implements operating guides and procedures to ensure the plant is operated within prescribed parameters and according to standard procedures and plant objectives, prepares work schedules, equipment operation schedules, preventive maintenance schedules and equipment inspections; provides information, recommendations and advice to plant management regarding the operating needs of the plant; and plans and implements special projects for updating equipment/systems and plant expansion.

Ensures the proper treatment of water used in plant equipment: Reviews recorded data on water treatment, checks the status of chemical analysis for boiler water, condensate and cooling water systems, and ensures that chemical treatment is maintained within prescribed parameters.

Ensures the appropriate management for fuel inventory and other materials involved in plant operation.

Ensures the maintenance of plant operating records and preparation of operating reports: Establishes operating recording procedures, reviews data daily, and compiles data into reports as required.

Performs staff supervision: Interviews and participates in hiring of new employees, evaluates employee performance, issues disciplinary actions, and assists in the record keeping of employee time and payroll information.

Trains and instructs subordinates within the unit, identifies training deficiencies and makes appropriate referrals and arrangements, and evaluates training effectiveness and recommends appropriate changes.

Coordinates operations with scheduled and unscheduled maintenance to avoid conflicts and unnecessary interruptions in service, and supervises maintenance staff in the absent of the maintenance supervisor.

High School diploma or GED certificate.

At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in the trade.

Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the stationary engineer trade.

Possession of an appropriate stationary engineer’s license for the facility assigned.

Possession of DC 1st Class Engineer’s License.
