The Claim Representative is a non-exempt position in the State Auto Claims Auto Express department. The major responsibility is to investigate, evaluate, document and conclude multiple-line claims of a basic or routine level of complexity. This is a training position; thus, the level of complexity will depend on the experience level of the associate. Claims assignments are regionalized, but the expectation is that the incumbent will be capable of demonstrating an ability to handle several states interchangeably. Adjuster licensing and continuing education is required by statute in some states. Work hours will range from 8:00 a.m. 4:15 p.m. or from 11:00 a.m. 7:15p.m.
Success requires a disciplined approach to all job-related activities. A solid foundation of personal organization, sound decision making and analytical skills, customer service skills, and a clear understanding of team commitment are required. Previous experience in the work place, academics, or school sponsored extra-curricular participation that provided an opportunity to develop these skills is preferred. This individual should demonstrate the ability to communicate in a clear manner and should possess excellent interpersonal skills. He or she must also demonstrate confidence in her or his decision-making ability. A college degree is preferred.
This is typically a trainee position and most will have little to no previous claims experience. Once trained, the primary focus of this position is to competently handle to conclusion the unit s less complex files while providing outstanding customer service. Prior experience in a position requiring direct customer contact is preferred. Typically, a Claim Representative in this unit would need 12-18 months of claim handling experience prior to being considered for promotional opportunities.
The Claim Representative must exhibit good decision-making with a solid, pragmatic approach, have knowledge of basic math, strong reading comprehension, strong writing skills, and proficient keyboard skills. This position functions within a paperless environment. In addition to keyboard proficiency, PC skills are required to meet the requirements of virtually every aspect of the job. Knowledge of Outlook, internet navigation and word processing is required. This is a trainee position; therefore, there is latitude in reaching the learning curve necessary to be successful in this role. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to learn from his/her mistakes and apply knowledge to new situations. Most importantly, identify when it is time to seek assistance or ask additional questions.
The incumbent must be able to pass the necessary testing to obtain and retain adjuster licenses in all states where such licensure is mandated by statutory or regulatory guidelines. This determination is driven by staffing needs within our regionalized claim handling units.
Oral and written communications will be primarily with insured s, claimants, agents and our vendor partners. This is a claims service environment where our ability to provide outstanding customer service will rely on the incumbent s ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner. The Claim Representative must be able to express himself/herself fluently and coherently, and to provide explanations in a concise and positive manner. This individual must also be able to produce grammatically correct and clearly written correspondence including letters, memos, reports and claim file documentation.
The Claim Representative will handle a large number of claim files concurrently. She or he will encounter many different situations, policy forms, endorsements, and a volume of correspondence and documentation. To be effective, he or she must be highly disciplined, organized, consistently thorough in documenting all activity and able to prioritize effectively.
Licensing in the states requiring it is required and employment is contingent on the fact that incumbents are able to obtain and maintain adjuster licenses in those required states.
