This position performs routine and basic administrative duties for the City of Fredericksburg Department of Social Services. Position is responsible for answering phone calls, directing them to appropriate personnel or taking messages; and providing staff and the public with various information/materials. Additionally, the Clerk III is responsible for receiving, sorting, and distributing mail; receiving, filing, and inputting data; and processing correspondence.

Must possess a thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Department pertaining to specific duties of the Clerk III. Is able to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Has good organizational, customer service, and clerical skills. Has knowledge of modern office practices and equipment. Has knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling; has knowledge of basic mathematics. Is able to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to use computers for data and word processing and records management. Is able to type accurately at a rate sufficient for the successful performance of assigned duties. Has knowledge of how to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to detail as necessary in preparing records and reports. Is able to read administrative documents pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks. Is able to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Is able to offer assistance to fellow employees as necessary. Is able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has knowledge of how to perform duties in a courteous manner and with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public. Is capable of working under stressful conditions as required. Has knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving administrative tasks OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess extensive English/Spanish bilingual skills.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer prior administrative work experience in a customer service human services setting (social services, community services board, department of housing, health department, etc.), with a demonstrated ability to multi-task. Prefer extensive work experience providing customer service to the general public.

Special Requirements
The employment investigation may include: Fingerprint checks (State Police, FBI), local agency checks, VA Central Registry Check; employment verification as well as verification of education relative to the employment; and other checks of the hiring authority. Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license to include a driving record that meets agency standard. Must be willing to work in a community shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
