Clinical/Community Outreach Specialist

Get Tested Coachella Valley

Reports to: Project Director

POSITION PURPOSE

As a Clinical/Community Outreach Specialist, you will actively support the success of the Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign by educating and engaging both medical clinic personnel and members of the general public.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Major areas of responsibility include:

Ø Develop relationships with, enlist the partnership of, and positively influence an assigned list of medical clinics

Ø Actively engage and educate members of the public at community education and testing events

Ø Collaborate effectively with Desert AIDS Project staff, including Testing Manager and Team, Early Intervention Specialists, Volunteer Coordinator, and others

Primary Objectives

Ø Increase the number of medical clinics that make voluntary HIV testing a standard and routine practice

Ø Increase the number of individuals screened for HIV at community events

Ø Increase and document medical clinic and public support for the campaign

Ø Gain positive exposure for the campaign and educate medical staff, patients, and the general public

Specific Responsibilities of the Job

Develop relationships with and positively influence an assigned list of medical clinics

Ø Make telephone and email outreach; ask preliminary questions; set appointment

Ø Prepare customized materials for clinic visits

Ø With collaboration from Early Intervention Specialist, conduct in-person meetings at clinics

Ø Display/distribute signage, educational and promotional materials at clinics

Ø Maintain a database to document your contact history and clinic progress

Ø Follow-up to deepen relationships and commitment

Engage and educate members of the public at community education and testing events

Ø Actively engage and educate members of the public about the Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign

Ø Train and supervise volunteers

Ø Promote the availability of HIV screening at events

Ø Support efforts of Event Testing Team

Ø Solicit campaign pledge signatures

Ø Facilitate video testimonials

Ø Assist with set-up/tear-down of event space

Collaborate effectively with Desert AIDS Project staff

Ø Coordinate efforts with D.A.P. staff including Testing Manager, Testing Team, Early Intervention Specialists, Volunteer Coordinator, and others

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ø General knowledge of:
    • Medical clinic administration
    • HIV testing and treatment
Ø Excellent skills in:
    • Communicating in-person/one-to-one
    • Telephone and email outreach
    • Leading meetings and presenting to small and mid-sized groups
    • Volunteer training and supervision
Ø Basic computer skills including Outlook and Word; database experience a plus

Ø Demonstrated ability to effectively explain concepts and share ideas

Ø Demonstrated ability to speak in a straightforward, comfortable way about sex-related topics

Ø Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others

Ø Experience in sales and customer service helpful

Desired Experience, Attributes, and Education

Ø At least 2 years of experience working in medical settings; comfortable in medical clinic settings. Ideal candidate will have previously worked as a Medical Assistant, Nurse or LVN.

Ø Outgoing, enthusiastic, optimistic, high energy

Ø Great communicator, one-on-one and in groups

Ø Well-organized, self-starter, prompt and reliable

Ø Team player; willing to pitch in and do what’s needed

Ø Flexible; able to quickly adapt to changing circumstances

Ø Clean driving record

Ø Associates degree or equivalent experience at a minimum

Physical Demands

To assist with the set-up/tear-down of event space, employee must be generally fit and able to lift items weighing 40 pounds.

Work Environment

This job requires driving to medical clinic appointments and community events in a campaign Smart Car. Community events may be held indoors or outdoors in settings such as parks, college or corporate campuses, and parking lots.
