POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs specimen processing procedures, serves as a Team Leader for Phlebotomy staff, assists with Micro set-ups and performs laboratory testing within scope of licensure. The position requires exercise of independent judgment under minimum or moderate degree of supervision. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs specimen processing procedures on all in-house and reference testing specimens while ensuring proper labeling and specimen type and integrity.2.

Serves as Phlebotomy Team Leader by coordinating activities of Phlebotomy Team and assisting with training of new hires.3. Accurately performs in-scope quality control and laboratory testing within specified turn-around-time requirements.4. Manages supplies by checking inventory and expiration dates, ordering and stocking.5. Maintains knowledge of Nursing Order Entry system to assist with test ordering questions.6.

Communicates technical and procedural problems to Technical Supervisor, Manager, Director, Emergency Department and House Supervisor as needed.7. Answers phone and assists customers in a courteous and professional manner at all times.8. Performs all required documentation.9. Maintains a clean and organized work space.10.

Performs clerical duties as needed.11. Fosters teamwork through participation in department activities and committees.12. Carefully reviews and signs policies/procedures within specified time limits.13. Actively seeks to improve knowledge, skills and abilities.14.

Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered.15. Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient's care which results in patient harm.16. Maintains confidentiality of all Protected Health Information.17. Follows established policies and procedures and fulfills regulatory requirements at all times.18.

Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements.19. Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.20. Regular, Punctual and dependable attendance.21. Other duties as assigned.LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: (list required and preferred separately) National Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Technician certification required National Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) certification preferred State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Technician license preferredEXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately) Five years experience as a Phlebotomist in a hospital setting required Two years experience in specimen processing/specimen referrals required One year experience as shift supervisor/team leader preferredTwo years experience as Medical Laboratory Technician or military equivalent preferred
