Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Hilo, College of Pharmacy, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM HOURLY RATE: $13.38/Hr. (@ 50% FTE)

DUTIES: Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) in the completion of two studies entitled: “Efficacy of a vaccine against Angiostrongylus costaricensis to A. cantonensis in rats (Rattus rattus) from Hawaii” and “Development and optimization of quantitative PCR and ELISA tests for the detection of Hawaii Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Rat Lungworm) in blood using a rat model.” Assists in the completion of specific protocols including vaccination, parasite diagnostics, and antibody and cytokine production in the rats. Responsible for data recording, collating, and analyzing data sets. Assists in the preparation of draft manuscripts for publication and presentation. Assists in the trapping and collection of wild rats. Oversees production of offspring for the completion of the studies. Oversees and assists in blood sample collection as needed.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a scientifically-related field. EXPERIENCE: Two to six (2-6) months of direct experience working with rodents in a laboratory setting. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of the research process and the scientific method as well as of collecting, recording, tabulating, analyzing, and reporting biological data. Knowledge to live-capture and handle rodent species. Knowledge to work safely in laboratory and field situations. Ability to accurately collect, record, compute, and tabulate biological data, and to summarize technical data and write reports with proper organization and a high degree of precision. Ability to live-capture and handle rodent species. Ability to work safely in laboratory and field situations. Ability to supervise student researchers. Expertise in the use of computers and working knowledge of spreadsheet, graphic, and statistical software and applications.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a scientifically-related field. Familiar with UH and/or RCUH policies and procedures.
