Reporting to the Coding Supervisor, primary responsibilities for facility based coding includes the assignment of ICD-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes, modifiers, abstracting, selection of MS Diagnosis Related Groupings (MS-DRG), APC (Ambulatory Payment Classification), and coding for severity of illness. Contact with medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, provider offices, and outside organizations. Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or eligibility for certification is required. If eligible for certification at the time of employment, must pass exam within six months. Certified Coding Associate (CCA) will be considered with completed certification. If hired with only CCA credentials, CCS must be taken within two years of employment. Must be attentive to detail, organized, and capable of making decisions with coding regulations. Professional oral and written skills required, includes face to face, emails, and phone conversation. Ability to use functions of coding system, hospital computer systems, word processing, and reference resources.
