Under general supervision and according to established policies, procedures, and ICD9-CM guidelines, reviews medical records and assigns appropriate codes to all diagnosis, symptoms, and procedures for physician services performed in locations other than the physician practice. Enters codes into computer system. Performs a variety of related medical record clerical duties, and performs other related duties as assigned. Certification as RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician), CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based) or other recognized coding certificate is required. Multiple years experience in the coding and billing field may be considered if the education criteria is not met. One year of experience in coding for professional services in a clinic or physician office setting is required, with Surgical and Evaluation and Management coding experience preferred. Two years of formal education or training beyond high school or Associates Degree required.
