As an underwriter at Ohio Casualty, you will manage an assigned group of agencies, select profitable risks and retain a profitable portfolio of accounts. Job Summary:
To ensure a profitable book of business by appropriately pricing acceptable risks and rejecting those that are not acceptable within authority levels established. Market company products and services to the agents and actively participate in the agency management process.

Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority levels and company guidelines, the CL Underwriter accepts, rejects or modifies new and renewal commercial lines business with little or no guidance to ensure a profitable commercial book of business. Prices business according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines and ensures time service standards are met.
Markets company products through agent contacts to achieve company growth and profitability targets. Develops on-going relationships with agents, meets service standards established for new and renewal business, and keeps agent up-to-date with underwriting and/or product changes.
Manages complex book of Commercial Lines business in the $500 to $150,000 premium range, to maximize profitability and growth. Reviews loss activity (frequency, severity) for each agent in assigned territory. Considers mix of business, loss ratios by line, and fit of business with company guidelines. Works closely with the Territory Manager to identify problems and develop a plan of correction. May change policy deductibles, increase premium, non-renew policies. May recommend constraints on business an agent may submit or recommend that an agent be suspended.
Secures reinsurance as needed. Contacts facultative reinsurers and negotiates according to company standards for larger risks by contacting reinsurers with the best price and coverage within delegated authority limits.
May train agency staff on company products, services and underwriting philosophy.
Promotes the company's public image by networking within the insurance community to keep abreast of changes in the industry.

Qualifications:
BA/BS degree.
Three plus years of multi-line commercial underwriting experience (Package, Business Automobile, Workers Compensation, Commercial Umbrella).
Thorough knowledge of commercial lines products including, but not limited to the following industry segments: Construction, Manufacturing, Service, Retail, Wholesale, and Real Estate.
Proficiency in underwriting all commercial lines exposures.
Ability to prioritize work and provide timely customer service.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Able to handle more complex, higher hazard accounts with limited guidance and direction from the underwriting manager.
Currently hold or actively working towards insurance-related professional designation(s).
Excellent people skills that foster ongoing partnerships with assigned agencies.
Thorough knowledge of regulatory and policy differences among states in which business is transacted.
