The Communications Department is looking for an Occasional/On-Call Communications Operator. This position does not provide benefits and although there are no guaranteed hours, this individual must be available to work weekday/weekend day (7am-3:30pm), evening (3pm-11pm) and night (11pm-7am) shifts. Following established procedures, individual receives and answers incoming phone calls and directs them to the designated person, via office telephone, page, or radio. Places long distance calls for staff and patients. Answers and initiates responses to all emergency calls. Pages staff and monitors radio base station and various alarms. Maintains chronological logs and records.

Requires a high school diploma and three to six months of related operator experience; one year of relevant experience will be considered as a substitute for possession of a high school diploma. Must have the ability to effectively and efficiently operate a CBX (Computerized Business Exchange), electronic telephone sets, radio base station, paging system, fire and other alarm systems, and emergency fire telephone procedures sufficient to cope with a large volume of inquiries and situations, including emergencies. Requires analytical ability sufficient to recognize, assess, and respond to a variety of emergencies, and human and administrative problems. Work requires interpersonal skills sufficient to answer and route telephone calls, exchange routine factual information, greet and direct patients and visitors, and transmit confidential/sensitive information. Again, this is not a benefits eligible position and since it is an occasional/on-call position, there are no guaranteed hours; however, the hired individual must be available to work weekday/weekend day (7am-3:30pm), evening (3pm-11pm) and night (11pm-7am) shifts as needed.

On the Ellicott City Campus, the hired individual must be available to work weekday/weekend day from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and weekday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
