To perform a variety of paraprofessional technical assistance for computer systems; to assist in the acquisition of hardware and software; to perform a variety of complex technical duties in the installation and maintenance of stand-alone computer system, servers, computer network systems and peripherals; to provide assistance to computer users, and to provide technical support to the Academic Lab Managers/Assistants.

This is a permanent part-time position working approximately 30 hours per week. Hours are: Monday/Tuesday 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Wednesday/Thursday 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Friday/Saturday as needed.

Examples of Duties:
Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions:
Install, maintain, and upgrade assigned servers, computers, and related equipment.
Install, maintain and upgrade college WAN networking components.
I nstall, develop or modify computer software to facilitate computer processes and meet user specifications; debug and test all programs; provide proper documentation for all changes.
Assist in training college personnel in the use of network hardware and software providing professional workshops and individual tutoring.
Monitor license agreements to ensure that copyright compliance for software installed on college equipment; provide proper documentation for audits.
Document and record problems, solutions, programs and procedures for computer systems.
Respond to and answer complex questions of staff on computer systems, software programs, and related equipment.
Assist in the acquisition of computer related software, supplies and equipment by identifying the needs to accomplish proper support of college computer systems.
Participate in professional development activities individually and as assigned; research and implement new developments, products and techniques available to provide positive growth for college computer networks and related systems.
Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and software in areas of responsibility. Marginal Functions:
Assist with student registration.
Serve on college committees, attend staff development and training programs and support college functions.
Perform other duties as assigned. This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position. Qualifications and Working Conditions:
Knowledge of: Principles and procedures of computer network system installation and maintenance. Knowledge of server software. Windows and Novell preferred. Methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of computers and peripheral equipment. Components and parts used in modern computer equipment. Cable connections and currents. A variety of computer software programs and programming languages. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations. Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Ability to: Install, test, maintain and repair networks and microcomputers and related peripheral equipment. Troubleshoot software problems as required. Prepare and maintain work records. Analyze complex needs and requirements and translate them into appropriate, efficient processes. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations. Follow all safety rules and regulations of the department. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: ) sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time ) bending, crawling, stooping, kneeling or stretching during equipment installations ) lifting and carrying moderately heavy materials ) reaching above shoulder ) operating assigned equipment. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: ) making observations ) reading and writing ) operating assigned equipment ) communicating with others. Maintain mental capacity which permits: ) making sound decisions and using good judgment ) demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve: ) exposure to computer screens ) confining work spaces ) exposure to electrical hazards and noise.
Environmental Conditions: Office environment; exposure to computer screens, electrical hazards and noise. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; bending, crawling, stooping, kneeling or stretching during equipment installations; lifting and carrying moderately heavy materials; reaching above shoulder.

Experience and Training:
Experience: Two years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of modern servers, computers, networking components, and related peripheral equipment. Training: Associate’s degree with major course work in computer programming, information systems, engineering technology, database management or a related field required. License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid NC Driver’s License.
