Performs basic mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work in support of the County pump stations and related sewer system equipment. Services and maintains pump shafts and electric motors. Cleans, washes, and paints pump station and other sewer system equipment, piping, and structures. Responsible for assisting station mechanics and electricians with the repair and maintenance of pumps, check valves, emergency generator sets, and other related equipment. Work is usually performed under regular supervision, though at times the incumbents must work independently (when Mechanic is absent).
High school graduate or equivalent and 1 to 2 years experience in utilities work or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Safety shoes required.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
DMV records check conducted prior to employment.
This position is considered an Essential Position which requires the employee to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions, often outside normally scheduled work hours. Additionally, the employee is required to be on the division’s on-call rotation list.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including generators, pumps, valves, tanks, controls, and various mechanic's equipment and tools. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Work involves occasional lifting (weight varying between 40-100 pounds) and pushing and pulling, and hoisting of parts and equipment weighing between 40 and 50 pounds.
