Environmental Technician I/II Position with 2 years minimum experience in environmental assessment and remedial construction services. The primary focus of the position is to support investigation of petroleum and hazardous substance releases, development of remedial action plans, oversight of remedial construction and operating/maintaining soil and groundwater remediation systems. The candidate should have OSHA 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification and good mechanical and electrical trouble-shooting skills. A minimum of an associate degree in science or a related technical trade is desirable. Additional opportunities to provide support for a variety of environmental compliance services will be offered to the right candidate dependent upon education, training and the candidate’s desire to expand his or her value and versatility to Benesch’s clients.

Duties and Responsibilities :
Collects samples of environmental media (soil, sediment, water, air) for field screening and/or laboratory analysis for both investigation and construction – related tasks

Performs remedial construction observation tasks and responsibilities

  • Assists project team in assembling/constructing soil, groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems
  • Assists project team in remedial system start-up, commissioning and scheduled operations and maintenance functions including mechanical and electrical trouble-shooting
Conducts required research as directed by project supervisor

Support drilling, surveying or other construction engineering related activities

Proactively identify and develop solutions to potential construction and remedial system operation and maintenance issues

Assist with development of responses to client requests for proposals

Maintains company owned vehicle or other equipment assigned for use on the project.

Completes other responsibilities as assigned by Group Manager

  • Dependent upon candidate’s experience, duties related to remedial system assembly, installation, operation and maintenance may be initially under the supervision of the project senior technician, engineer or scientist but the goal is for the candidate to work independently within 1-3 months of initial hire on routine tasks and 3-6 months on more advanced technical operations and trouble shooting
Skill and Knowledge

Application of construction, environmental or geotechnical fundamentals as required

Working knowledge of site investigation tasks

Working knowledge/understanding of soil and groundwater remediation system principles of operation

Basic knowledge of construction, laboratory, field instruments and tools

Basic knowledge of construction procedures and materials

Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting

Working knowledge of appropriate software (MS Office products)

CADD and GIS Skills a plus

Aptitude to work independently

Basic knowledge of applicable codes and standards

Excellent communication skills

Required Training and Continuing Education

OSHA/HAZWOPER Training (40 Hr. and 8 Hr. annual refresher)
