JOB TITLE: Content Specialist – English - Memphis, TN

REPORTS TO: Head of Schools, Memphis

JOB GOAL : The Content Specialist serves as an instructional and curricular leader for the district while also demonstrating exemplary teaching in the classroom. In addition to playing a key role in the development of curricula, the Content Specialist creates and carries out a vision for a rigorous education that allows students to compete on a national level. Recognized as someone with both a deep and a broad understanding of their content area, the Content Specialist provides direction in the areas of standards development including vertical alignment, assessment, intervention, and content-specific pedagogy.

TRANSITION TEAM : This role is specific to the transition planning underway to launch a new YES Prep region in Memphis, Tennessee.


The Content Specialist will:
  • Lead a process to review YES Prep district standards within that content area compared to Common Core standards adopted by the state of Tennessee;
  • Make revisions and adjustments to the YES Prep district standards to align to the Common Core;
  • Analyze information available about newly adopted state-testing in Tennessee and compare information to the process for developing YES Prep district assessments, including a beginning of year benchmark assessment, semester assessments and interim formative / unit assessments;
  • Analyze the results of YES Prep district assessments, specifically on standards included in the Common Core, to ensure that standards are aligned not only vertically within the content area, but also horizontally across disciplines;
  • Work with team to analyze curriculum in other subject areas to create consistency in format of comparison between YES Prep and Common Core standards;
  • Recommend improvements in the design and implementation of the content area based on research and student achievement data;
  • Analyze other available data points and internal processes to build a reference guide about the curriculum development process at YES Prep and the adjustments needed to be aligned with Common Core expectations;
Professional Growth and Development:
  • Demonstrate current knowledge, understanding, and skill in teaching strategies and the learning process;
  • Keep well informed about current trends in curriculum and assessment practices;
  • Assist in planning and delivering instructional training modules
  • Participate in campus and district meetings and training sessions in order to enhance knowledge and skills;
  • Participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences outside of YES Prep to enhance knowledge and skills and further develop content goals; and
  • Additional duties as assigned

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution
  • Master’s Degree (Preferred) from an accredited educational institution.
  • Certification in Teaching / Instruction preferred
  • At least three years of exemplary teaching
  • An outstanding record of instruction and student achievement
  • Experience in administration and / or supervision, preferably in instruction

Length of Work Year:

This is a part-time (0.4 FTE), year round position; evening and weekend commitments also will be required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation commensurate with experience; YES offers a friendly and committed team of colleagues. This part-time position will be eligible for medical insurance through YES Prep Public Schools and will not be eligible for any other YES Prep benefit offerings.
