The Cornell University Library is seeking a Copy Cataloger/Batch Processing Assistant with reading and writing proficiency in Chinese. Under the supervision of the head of the Copy Cataloging /Inputting Unit, this individual creates, reviews, and edits machine-readable bibliographic records in the library database (Voyager) based on Library of Congress (LC) copy or other acceptable copy for newly acquired items in all formats mainly for Chinese and other languages as needed. This person also creates abbreviated and minimal level catalog records and assigns classification numbers to selected materials, exercising considerable judgment concerning data elements to be included in the catalog records. This position also involves duties associated with the Ordering Unit which include ordering and receiving firm orders and processing approvals. The materials include a variety of formats and are acquired from several vendors in East Asia. Performs batch processing of MARC metadata for the purpose of loading new records and correcting existing records in the Voyager database. The above duties may require performing similar tasks as part of library cooperative agreements.
This is a two year term position.
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience or training
Flexibility and ability to perform detailed work accurately and to exercise good judgment under pressure
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to operate a current Windows operating system
Consistency in and aptitude for detailed work
Prior work experience in an academic library
Excellent reading and written knowledge of Chinese required
Aptitude and interest in working with data loads and automated processes
Reading knowledge of multiple East Asian languages preferred
Previous experience in technical services, or equivalent experience or training
Demonstrated good understanding of relevant standards (e.g. MARC21 formats, AACR2, RDA, Library Technical Services and Cornell University Libraries’ guidelines)
Demonstrated good understanding of inputting conventions and standards for the national cataloging utilities and the Voyager system
