Performs responsible protective service and human support work overseeing the care and custody of the inmates in the Adult Detention facility to ensure the confinement, safety and well-being of the inmates; does related work as required. Work is performed under immediate supervision.
Essential Job Functions*:
Position involves standing and walking both indoors and outdoors for extended periods; Must be physically able to intervene in physical altercations between inmates as well as protection to self. Work may frequently involve considerable personal hazard. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for peripheral vision, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, and hazards. Worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and required to wear specialized protective equipment.
Processes the inmates into the penal institution taking charge of personal effects and advising them of institutional rules and regulations; Oversees the inmates during active periods of recreation and work; Attends to the personal needs and activities of the prisoners according to institutional needs and requirements; Conducts periodic security checks of the inmates as well as the institution grounds; Escorts and transports inmates to judicial proceedings and other institutions; Prepares records and reports of daily activity; Provides security and does security checks during visitation hours; Utilizes verbal and physical crisis intervention and application of restraint techniques; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Administers medication to inmates as necessary under instruction and supervision of a physician; Assists new officers in on-the-job training; Serves on hearing committees for disciplinary actions; Answers public inquiries about inmates, rules and regulations of the institution.

Some knowledge of the practice of modern penology; General knowledge of the security, rules and regulations of the institution; Ability to communicate effectively verbally, nonverbally and in writing; Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates and maintain discipline; Skill in the use of fire arms and restraint equipment; possession of physical agility to control prisoners; Ability to prepare records and reports; Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and with the public.
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Special License and Certificates:
Possession of a valid drivers license; Must be a certified Correctional Officer.
