Custodian/Animal Care Technician
The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) has an opening for a part-time Custodian/Animal Care Technician (ACT) at our Detroit Center for Animal Care. Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to: providing direct care and maintenance for all animals in the adoption center, including feeding and general husbandry; cleaning kennels, cages, and all areas of the adoption center; and performing light maintenance. Schedule will include weekdays, weekends, and evenings.
The Custodian/ACT must maintain a professional and positive attitude and uphold the principles and beliefs of the organization at all times; keep emotions under control; read and interpret standard operating procedures and protocols; follow instructions; respond to management direction; take responsibility for own actions; observe safety and security procedures; and use equipment and materials properly. Dependable attendance is a must!
Candidates must have a High School diploma or GED as well as one to three months of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous maintenance experience is helpful. Candidate must be able to feed and water animals according to schedules and established protocol; observe animals for signs of illness and advise proper personnel accordingly; bathe animals in accordance with established guidelines; exercise animals regularly to minimize the adoption center environment stress; hold animals during euthanasia process; clean and disinfect kennels, cages, yard areas, counters, and surfaces; maintain facility grounds to ensure all fecal matter and debris is removed; sweep and mop adoption center; clean bathrooms and restock supplies; empty trash; wash windows; lift up to fifty (50) pounds; and complete laundry and dish washing timely and effectively.
