DPS Operations and the Office of Professional Development are now requiring this position to take a housekeeping course before candidates are hired. This course, along with orientation, will take three business days. Upon successful completion of this class, you will be paid for these hours as a new DPS employee. If you are already gainfully employed during the day, please keep this in mind as attendance in this class is mandatory.

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY: Working under the direction of the Facility Manager and/or Assistant Custodian, the Part-Time Custodian Helper assists in keeping the building and grounds clean, safe, and sanitary. He/she also performs a number of minor maintenance duties to keep the building and equipment operational and safe.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Housekeeping • Sweeps and dusts classrooms, offices, auditoriums, gymnasiums, lounges, libraries, stairs, and corridors. • Cleans lunchroom area • Empties and washes wastebaskets and trash cans. • Cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains and classroom sinks • Cleans and disinfects lavatory and clinic, floors, walls, mirrors, and fixtures • Replenishes soap, toilet tissue, and towels • Drags, mops, strips, seals, waxes, and polishes floors • Washes walls, ceilings, and woodwork • Removes graffiti and gum from walls, floors, and other surfaces • Spot cleans floors, walls, and doors; cleans up spills • Washes light fixtures, lockers, and display cases • Washes windows, inside and outside • Washes classroom furniture Grounds Care • Cleans up trash on grounds and along the fence lines • Levels sand under playground equipment • Cultivates shrub and tree beds, trims shrubs, mows grass, and edges walk • Sprays weed killer • Shovels snow; salts and sands key walks and steps • Sweeps walkways and parking lots Building and Equipment Maintenance • Replaces fluorescent tubes and bulbs • Keeps pencil sharpeners in working condition • Replaces furniture glides • Assembles furniture and equipment • Makes minor repairs to furniture and equipment • Checks equipment for unsafe conditions • Reports unsafe conditions immediately to Facility Manager or Assistant Custodian Heating and Ventilation: • Cleans univents and filters • Cleans air ducts Miscellaneous Duties • Distributes educational supplies materials, and equipment to proper location • Assists school personnel and students move heavy and bulky items • Arranges all-purpose rooms for necessary use • Moves other furniture and equipment as requested by school personnel • Helps lock doors, windows, and gates to secure the building • Performs other related duties as assigned Requirements: • Must successfully complete DPS training program within 90 days of start date • Eighteen years or older • High school diploma or equivalent required • Ability to communicate effectively in English • Ability to work alone and secure the building at night • Ability to interact effectively with others, including children • Ability to perform tasks which involve working on a ladder or scaffolding and climbing stairs • Ability to lift up 50 lbs. using appropriate lifting techniques and equipment.
