Play a key role in shaping the voice and direction of WBUR’s local news gathering and production on the radio, digital and on other platforms. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of news content while ensuring the evolution of WBUR’s high journalistic standards. Work with the News Director and Managing Director of News and Programming to direct WBUR’s editorial resources and staff to be the very best in public radio journalism, both in breaking news and in thoughtful enterprise stories, features and interviews. Supervise the News Director and Digital Managing Editor. Hire and direct news management personnel, oversee hiring of other staff, conduct performance evaluations, plan and manage the news budget and provide oversight of fill-in personnel as needed. Supervise all news decisions, including but not limited to: overseeing news assignments, planning of long-term news projects and overseeing newscasts. Maintain daily communication with WBUR Newsroom
and its managers, show producers, and digital staff to produce rich content for daily and long-term coverage on wbur.org and other digital platforms. Develop and maintain community and professional relations, including but not limited to: establishing contact with local newsmakers and press staffs; liaison with National Public Radio; developing cooperative relationships with other news organizations; interviewing community leaders and representing the department to the general public as necessary.
B.A./B.S., or equivalent, Master’s Degree preferred, strong management skills and capability of fashioning and leading a strong, effective and productive team of reporters, anchors and producers, excellent communication skills and more than eight years of related experience.
