POSITION: The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Pamela C. Brown, is interested in receiving applications

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Master's degree and a New York State School District
Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL) certificate by the time of appointment. A Doctorate
Degree is preferred. Candidates must have eight years of supervisory experience. Candidates with
successful administrative experience in an urban school district with a large racially and economically
diverse population are preferred.
Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) has begun a period of change that seeks to transform the district and its
schools. With the appointment of Superintendent Pamela Brown and a significant level of local, state,
and federal attention and investment, Buffalo has an incredible opportunity to ensure that all of its
students graduate prepared to succeed in college or a well-paying career.
Currently, BPS has 58 schools serving approximately 32,000 students, of whom 79% qualify for free or
reduced price lunch and 77% are students of color. Of the 58 schools in the district, 28 have been
given “priority” status by the state and 16 more have been given “focus” status. Within the district,
a sizable number of students do not meet state standards, and only about half of those who attend
high school graduate with a diploma. Superintendent Brown is building a talented and committed

The Deputy Superintendent will work alongside Superintendent Brown to ensure that schools and
students have what they need to be successful. A key member of the executive team, the Deputy
Superintendent will help steer the central office towards a new service orientation, positioning
schools as the primary unit of change and providing central office supports to enable continuous
The Deputy Superintendent will help lead the executive team to deliver on the district's strategic
plan goals and priorities by aligning BPS programs and resources to the needs of all BPS staff,
students, families and community members. S/he will lead key initiatives, oversee staff performance,
facilitate communication between the Superintendent's Office and other internal and external
stakeholders, serve as a strategic partner and problem solver, and represent the Superintendent
when needed at public events.
The Deputy Superintendent will report directly to the Superintendent and will be responsible
for managing the Chief of Special Projects, Chief of Student Support Services, Chief of Curriculum,
Assessment and Instruction, Chief of Operations, Chief of Talent Management, Chief Financial Officer,
Chief of Research, Evaluation and Data Management, and three/four Chiefs of School Leadership.
Specifically, the Deputy Superintendent will be responsible for the following:
Ensure delivery of a coherent, data-driven, research-based, and impactful instruction and student supports across the district.
Develop recommendations and advise the Superintendent on key strategic, policy, managerial, logistical, and administrative decisions. Serve as strategic partner and chief problem-solver to anticipate and address a variety of issues across the district.
Coach senior team members to ensure peak performance and progress towards strategic goals. Develop, refine, and promote best-in-class performance management systems and organization-wide efforts to reinforce core values and achieve aggressive goals.
Work with cabinet members to design and implement new operational models that ensure efficient flow of effective services and supports to schools.
Partner with the Superintendent and senior leadership team to review the organizational structure and lead the change- management process necessary to change BPS into a service-oriented team.
Serve a central coordinating role in critical initiatives, inclusive of project management; policy development and analysis; strategic planning, implementation and evaluation; and communication efforts.
Track priorities for the Superintendent to ensure organizational bandwidth is focused most effectively.
Lead organizational conversation to determine long range needs tied to the strategic plan, forecast available resources, and manage policies that maximize investments in BPS strategy.
Manage a team in the Office of the Superintendent to ensure service orientation, efficiency, and effectiveness.
Act as designee for the Superintendent.
Facilitate the recruitment, selection, and ongoing development of the Superintendent's team.
District Community Relations
Collaborate with district partners.
Act as a liaison to the New York State Department of Education, city agencies (including the Mayor's Office), policymakers, funders, and other key external partners to maintain strong and responsive relationships focused on customer service, accountability, and operational efficiency.

An ability to organize people and resources in ways that improve instruction and student achievement
APPOINTMENT: Appointment will be made by the Superintendent following assessment
of training, experience, credentials and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be
scheduled where appropriate. A contract will be developed with the Superintendent and
the successful candidate.
SALARY: By contractual agreement with a range of $160,000 - $185,000
