The Department for International Development (DFID) is funding the Global Learning Programme (GLP) to give every child in the UK the opportunity to learn about the world around them, about the essential facts of poverty and underdevelopment which face children their own age in other countries and to develop the knowledge and skills to make judgements about global poverty, its causes and what can be done to reduce it.
The Programme will be delivered by the Development Education Consortium which brings together seven organisations with experience and expertise in delivering development education, operating under a single management framework with Pearson as the lead contractor with DfID. The GLP will operate for five years from 2012 to 2017 and will target students at Key Stages 2 and 3 with the intention of having an impact in 50% of maintained primary, secondary and special schools across England.
TheDevelopment Education Local Advisors will be key members of the GLP delivery team and will be responsible for leading the delivery of the Programme within their designated local areas.
- To raise awareness and interest in the GLP within their designated local areas and to encourage local schools to participate
- To target and work with senior leadership teams in existing networks, in federations, clusters and individual schools and in teaching schools to encourage engagement
- To recruit new Expert Centres and to provide specialist support during their involvement with the Programme
- To provide training, support and guidance to LPs in other schools engaging with the Programme
- To work with local providers such as Development Education Centres and NGOs and to help connect them with schools requiring support
- To provide specialist support and lead localised curriculum making activity in development education
- Towork at a regional/local level to identify appropriate conferences and workshops in order to engage members of these networks with the GLP and to signpost specific support on offer from Local Advisors and Expert Centres
- To ensure that all teachers engaged with the Programme have the opportunity for critical reflection and sharing of their professional development experiences through regular forums and online discussions.
- To liaise with Local Authorities within their individual regions
- To undertake other GLP project-related activity, reasonably requested by the Development Education National Leaders.
- Understanding of development education issues and commitment to the aims of the Global Learning Programme
- Successful experience of educational improvement and innovation and of encouraging school engagement and participation
- Experience of providing leadership and motivation to in-school colleagues
- Excellent organisational skills and some exposure to project management
- Up-to-date knowledge of good practice in development education, including familiarity with providers
- Excellent training and facilitation skills including running and organising of training events
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, plus experience of presenting, and of communicating with senior colleagues both internally and externally
- High-level analytical skills.
