Work Conditions: Job Description: Diesel Mechanics are responsible for diagnostic tasks, inspecting, testing, and repair as applicable to facilities and diesel/electric locomotives. Diesel Mechanics must be able to operate various machine tools and equipment associated with this work.
Diesel Mechanics are subject to working various shifts with the possibility of rest days being scheduled on non-weekend days. They may be subject to working overtime that would be paid at the overtime rate.
Training
Norfolk Southern provides a 6-12 week long comprehensive training program at our facility in McDonough, Georgia, 35 miles south of Atlanta on I-75. McDonough Training Center combines classroom and field instruction. Norfolk Southern will reimburse travel to and from McDonough. While in McDonough, Norfolk Southern will provide hotel lodging and a meal allowance. The majority of training for Student Diesel Mechanics will be done at their home point where they will be paid the applicable rate as listed below.
Pay Rates
During the first eight weeks of employment, Student Diesel Mechanics will earn $450.00 per week. Applicants who do not qualify as journeymen are subject to a 2-year training program, after which they will receive full rates. The full union scale for Machinists is $26.24 per hour. The rate progression for Students Diesel Mechanics is as outlined:

In order to progress to the next rate level, employees must complete 244 creditable days of training in their current step rate. Upon completion of 488 creditable days of training, Student Diesel Mechanics will be considered Journeymen Diesel Mechanics. Diesel Mechanics are responsible for monthly payment of union dues from the first day of employment.
