Position Summary:
Do you look at YouTube, Google Maps, Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter, Kinect, iPhones, etc. and think about how they could be awesome tools for designing learning communities and experiences? We are seeking a design and technology savvy individual, passionate about public education reform in high need communities and excited by the opportunity to work towards re-imagining schools and learning.
The Digital Innovation Associate will be a key team member in the EDesign Lab (www.edesignlabs.org) initiative that brings together teachers and technologists to design and develop new digital learning experiences for students. The Digital Innovation Associate will help facilitate design and development, coordinate/manage the community of teachers and technologists, and engage in knowledge management of the design process. The position is part-time (around 21 hours a week) with potential growth after the first year.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
Co-facilitate design sessions with teachers and technologists (brainstorming, prototyping, etc.)
In-person planning and problem solving with teachers and technologists
Community management and coordination of teachers and expert design network (curriculum designers, other organizations working in similar fields, etc)
Project management (managing timelines, Q/A on prototypes, following up on milestones)
Knowledge management. Capturing and analyzing best practices and lessons learned
Other responsibilities as needed from the Design Lab and Research and Innovation Team
Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college (Masters degree a plus)
Understanding and comfort with web 2.0 tools, virtual communities, and interactive technologies
Attentive to detail, extremely well-organized
Creative thinker; balances an innovative vision with a practical eye for getting things done
Strong facilitation, people, written and visual communication skills
Experience with user-focused design processes and methods preferred
Knowledge and experience with instructional design, curriculum design, and schools preferred
Valued technical skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, basic html and web site creation skills (e.g. Wordpress), able to troubleshoot basic computer technology hiccups when necessary

EDesignLabs (www.edesignlabs.org), funded by the Ford Foundation, is a collaboration between educators, technologists, and designers to prototype and incubate real examples of what interactive learning experiences can look like that integrate emerging digital contexts and extend learning outside of the classroom. In the lab, NYC public school teachers collaborate with creative technologists to design and develop the next-generation of digital learning experiences that can include: data visualizations and content mashups, mobile apps, digital games, augmented reality experiences, social networks, etc.
