The University of Pittsburgh seeks an experienced leader who has a proven track in academic support, instructional and learning technologies, and faculty development. The Director of Instructional Services and Associate Director to CIDDE is a senior level leadership position within CIDDE, with a focus on enhancing the quality of education at the University of Pittsburgh. This position leads a team of colleagues who collaborate with faculty to improve courses and learning environments by broadening their understanding of the science of learning and how new pedagogical approaches and technologies can enhance student performance. The Director of Instructional Services serves as an advocate for the effective and innovative use of information technologies and digital media within the academic and research context. The primary responsibilities of the position are to coordinate the work of two key functional areas –Teaching Support and Educational Technology. The Director of Technology Services supervises two managers who jointly work with their teams to help faculty design and teach courses, solve teaching problems, apply appropriate learning technologies to teaching, and support online learning. The unit is responsible for an active faculty development program, an expanding Teaching Assistant initiative, individual teaching consultations, support for the Blackboard learning management system and support for media services and other educational technologies. The unit also operates a testing center and has responsibility for coordination of several activities on behalf of the Office of the Provost, such as New Faculty Orientation, Instructional Excellence grants, and the annual Diversity in the Curriculum program. The position requires a minimum of ten years’ experience in instructional design, teaching, and instructional technology, with a significant portion of that time having been spent in a leadership role. The Director of Technology Services must be results-oriented and have a solid understanding of and experience with current technological tools for supporting teaching, learning and creation and delivery of online course materials. Teaching experience in higher education is required, as are strong supervisory skills. The position requires the ability to articulate a vision for the future and lead teams toward that vision. A broad understanding of current practices in teaching, learning and technology, typically gained through experience at multiple institutions and/or leadership roles in national professional organizations, is critical to this role. Solid educational technology skills and experience with the Blackboard Learning Management System or similar LMS is required. To be successful in this position you must have the ability to meet and manage multiple deadlines, foster teamwork among disparate groups and build a solid, creative and collaborative team. The Director of Technology Services’ position is highly visible on campus, and requires the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, senior administrators and staff both within and outside the Center. Strong management skills and experience managing budgets is necessary for success. A Master’s degree in instructional or curriculum design, education, information science or related field is required, a Ph.D. is preferred. Minimum Education Level Required Masters.
