In this role the Director, Facilities Engineering & Site Management will be responsible for the Engineering, Maintenance, Site Services, Facility and Lab Operations for the corporate site in South SF and other US locations as required. This leadership position requires planning, development, implementation, administration, and budgeting of the facilities and property administration programs and processes, as well provides technical expertise and serves as a resource to assigned departments for building related engineering, security, safety and operational issues. The Director works closely with department leaders and is the primary liaison with consultants, architects and general contractors to oversee the generation of schematics, construction documents and cost estimates associated with building renovations, plant and lab expansion, as well as construction management to ensure timely completion of renovation projects on time and on budget. In addition, responsibilities also include the day-to-day management of security, preventative maintenance, calibration, painting/carpentry, power plant, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and Occupational Health and Safety.
Directs and instructs group on priorities concerning security issues, repair, maintenance, calibration and efficient lab operations.
An Advanced degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent
10+ years of industry experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership position
Or a combination of education and experience
Develop, implement and maintain programs and processes to ensure efficient high quality of operations, office planning, equipment maintenance, facility, utility & security system’s infrastructure to ensure compliance with local building codes as well as, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
Responsible for the enforcement of safety and security regulations and compliance issues as they pertain to the buildings, staff and operations.
Perform feasibility and reliability studies to improve and optimize facility engineered systems
Develop short and long term planning as it relates to the Security, Maintenance, Engineering Department and EHS.
Participate in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
Define and implement ideas that contribute to sustainable growth of the company.
Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as EPA, DCA, FDA (CDRH/CBER), OSHA, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
Ensure that the assigned departments comply with established policies, procedures and programs for quality assurance, safety, human resources and contamination control.
Ensure adequate equipment and supplies for department.
Develop and maintain established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
Prepares of plans specifications and budgets for renovations/repair projects and solicits/administers outside contracted services to supplement in-house staff for the implementation of major maintenance and renovation projects.
Provides construction management for various special projects.
Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.
Coordinates the assignment and metrics of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
Knowledge & Expertise:
Expertise and experience with biotechnology utility and process systems, including electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing, and implementing solutions to ensure robust, uninterrupted operations of these systems.
The candidate must be able to interpret and improve concepts, techniques, and standards and new applications based on engineering principles, theories and practice.
Must have exceptional organization and communication skills to interact across the company to all levels of the organization, both issues and opportunities that affect functional and corporate growth, including the ability to effectively present information to various levels of an organization.
Experience with group management, capital management, client management, construction management, project management, long range strategic planning, procurement and management of design professionals and contractors, entitlement processing, cGMP manufacturing facilities and process design, validation master planning, commissioning and qualification of laboratories, process equipment and facilities.
Must have good instincts, sound judgment and ability to solve problems and handle emergency situations.
Must be computer proficient with working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office products.
