The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is a research-intensive department in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Its total annual budget is in excess of 14 million. Over 50 of its annual revenue is from research, 29 from state appropriation and the remaining 21 from a mix of restricted and unrestricted trusts and auxiliaries. The department has 172 employees including 31 faculty and 51 staff. The department maintains 59,642 net square feet of space, half being wet laboratory research space. The department houses the UNC Water Institute and the ESE Design Center, which provides design and fabrication services for customized research equipment. The department has 172 students enrolled in six different degree programs for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students. This position is responsible for managing the department’s overall budget, planning and reporting on financial issues. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant external and University policies related to business practices, research practices and human resources. The position is responsible for oversight of departmental administrative staff and services including IT and space management. The position reports to the department Chair, but serves the needs of department faculty in support of our research, academic and service missions. Efficient, timely and responsive management of business systems and administrative services are vital to the success of the research mission of the department in particular. The position also serves as a liaison with School and University business units and must work closely with the Associate Dean for Business and Administration and her staff on multiple matters.

Educational Requirements

The individual filling this position must have a master’s or higher degree and at least five years of management-level experience in the business and administrative aspects of a higher-education institution or research center. In the absence of a master’s or higher degree, they must have a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of comparable experience is required.
