NOTICE OF POSITION
The Superintendent of Schools, Pamela C. Brown, Ed.D., is interested in receiving applications
from qualified candidates for the position of:
DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL LEADERSHIP (4 Positions)

Candidates must have a Master's degree, and a New York State School District Administrator (SDA),
or School District Leader (SDL) certificate by the time of appointment. Candidates must have a
minimum of four (4) years combined certificated teaching and supervisory experience, with a minimum
of one (1) years at the supervisory level. Candidates with prior experience in an urban school district
with a large racially and ethnically diverse population are preferred.
Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) has begun a period of change that seeks to transform the district and
its schools. With the appointment of Superintendent Pamela Brown and a significant level of local,
state, and federal attention and investment, Buffalo has an incredible opportunity to ensure that
all of its students graduate prepared to succeed in college or a well-paying career.
Currently, BPS has 58 schools serving approximately 34,000 students, of whom 79% qualify for free
or reduced price lunch and 77% are students of color. Of the 58 schools in the district, 28 have been
given “priority” status by the state and 16 more have been given “focus” status. Within the district,
a sizable number of students do not meet state standards, and only about half of those who attend
high school graduate with a diploma. Superintendent Brown is building a talented and committed
leadership team to partner with her in moving BPS towards the ambitious goal of preparing all students
The Director of School Leadership--working with the Chief of School Leadership, Supervising Principal,
and Supervisor for School Supports—will play a crucial role in ensuring that BPS realizes it mission of
college and career readiness for all students in Buffalo. Under the direction of the Chief of School
Leadership, each Director of School Leadership will supervise academic and instructional coaches that
support 15-20 schools. This position represents one of the district's key levers for turning around the
lowest performing schools and supporting continuous improvement in all schools.
The Director of School Leadership reports to the Chief of School Leadership.
Specifically, the Director of School Leadership will be responsible for the following:
Work with the Chief of School Leadership to organize efforts and resources to support district's strategy for school turnaround, school improvement, and instruction and supports for students in the 15-20 schools assigned to the Chief of School Leadership.
Work with Chief of School Leadership to monitor implementation of district's strategy for school turnaround, school improvement, and instruction and supports for students and adjust strategy as needed.
Work with Chief of School Leadership to define and phase in the district's “earned-autonomy” model for schools.
Support the Chief of School Leadership, who serves as the district's primary supervisor of and support provider for 15-20 schools.
Work with Chief of School Leadership to create a system that uses data to establish a culture of data-based decision making; build capacity to use data collaboratively, continuously and effectively to improve teaching and learning.
Supervise and train coaches who help principals identify staff and student needs and suggest leadership strategies to promote continuous improvement in performance, aligned with School Comprehensive Educational Plan (SCEP)
Supervise and train coaches who conduct professional development and support principals and teachers on a range of issues, including curriculum implementation, assessment of student progress, instructional strategies, RtI strategies, parent and community involvement, data analysis and use, instructional leadership, and effective use of SBITs.
Conduct instructional rounds and provide training to coaches on conducting instructional rounds; ensure that coaches are supporting schools in implementing effective SBITs.
Facilitate the professional development to principals and assistant principals (Leadership Academies, Instructional Rounds, Probationary Administrators' Meetings, Leadership Conference, Monthly Principals Meetings).
Supervise and assist in the training of coaches in the areas of instruction, data use, and content/curriculum areas.
Support Chief of School Leadership, who is responsible for preparing and overseeing Principal Improvement Plans.
Support Chief of School Leadership, who must review and evaluate the development and implementation of the School Comprehensive Educational Plan (SCEP) for effectiveness.
Work with the Chief of School Leadership and Supervisor of the team comprising a “one-stop” shop for addressing principals' questions or concerns related to curriculum and instruction, professional development, human resources, operations, facilities, and finance.
Support Chief of School Leadership who works with school leaders to develop budgets, identify appropriate resources, and approve financial plans.
Work with Chief of School Leadership who oversees and monitors the Extended Learning Opportunity Program in schools.

Ability to work collaboratively to support school turnaround and school improvement
Strong instructional leadership capabilities
Strong management, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to develop, execute, and monitor high-impact professional development and coaching
Proficiency managing a data-based, change-management process, and expertise in assessing, understanding and using data to identify a change in instructional practice that will accelerate learning for all students
Appointment will be made by the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience,
credentials and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate.
SALARY: Administrator's schedule based on BCSA contract.
