Director of University Relations – Gift Programs

Southwestern University invites applications for the position of Director of University Relations – Gift Programs. This position manages the annual giving programs in order to raise current funds for the University.


include, but are not limited to: develop creative strategies for all aspects of the Gift Programs (phonathon, direct mail, Class Agents, social media, and e-solicitations); work directly with Class Agents (70+ volunteers) to train, inspire, and motivate involvement that results in increased alumni participation in making annual gifts; identify and cultivate relationships with new leadership gift prospects; serve as chief Gift Programs liaison and provide direct support to the Gift Programs Board; work with the Office of Alumni and Parents and the Parent Leadership Gift Council to facilitate a coordinated effort for communicating with parents of current students and former students; hire, train, guide and supervise the Gift Programs Staff; prepare and maintain the department budget; conduct regular prospect screening sessions with key University volunteers/donors and perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree, five years of development or related experience, one year of supervisory experience; experience recruiting, training, and directing volunteers; experience managing a budget; excellent written and verbal interaction and communication skills, strong leadership and work ethic; proven supervisory and management skills; the ability to work with others as a member of a team and to direct the work of volunteers and support staff, able to perform well in stressful situations and a respect for the confidential nature of the work.

Job Requirements

Position Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree.

Five years of development or related experience, with one year of supervisory experience.

Experience crafting and communicating a case for support, especially scripts for phonathons and publications for direct mail appeals.

Experience in recruiting, training, and directing volunteers.

Ability to supervise and to work with others as a member of a team.

Experience managing a budget.

Ability to respect confidential information.

Proven supervisory and management skills.
