The Director of Inventory Management provides leadership and direction to the planning and placement staff on the preparation of merchandise plans and placement plans that align with the merchandise strategy. The position oversees line level planning and store/distribution center placement to ensure performance to plan. The Director is responsible for developing and executing a profitable, customer focused planning and placement strategy, while enhancing the overall department, group and company strategy. The Director is accountable for the development of a high performance, customer centric team. The position partners directly with the Vice President/General Merchandise Manager to ensure that in-stock, inventory productivity and assortment productivity business goals are achieved.
Given the complexity of the role, a minimum of 18 months tenure is required.
Qualifications:
Responsibilities
Oversees all planning and placement processes used to achieve key metrics on the balanced scorecard
Acts as the business administrator for the overall merchandise planning process
Partners with the Business Finance Manager on the resulting financial plan
Advises Vice President/General Merchandise Manager on opportunities for improving inventory asset utilization to drive sales and margin
Represents planning and placement during executive level strategy and merchandise review sessions (profit pattern, merchandise/category strategy, etc.)
Supports business strategy by overseeing the overall financial plan
Reviews and analyzes business and line performance based on information prepared by Planning Managers/Planners and Placement Managers
Incorporates modeling, situation analysis, problem diagnosis, and operations analysis to support business decision making with financial analysis
Participates in weekly and monthly in season business management meetings, presenting analysis, calling out issues and action items
Monitors and participates in the monthly and seasonal post event review process
Monitors inventory performance and directs appropriate mid-course corrections to achieve forecasts
Monitors the selection of appropriate allocation and replenishment strategies (weeks of coverage, review method, etc.)
Monitors and troubleshoots inventory levels at distribution center and store level
Manages promotional readiness process
Maintains productive and supportive working relationships with stores, districts, regions and vendors
Represents business priorities with support organizations (Logistics, Finance, Merchandising)
Takes ownership for providing data integrity within areas of control
Develops associates through coaching, mentoring, performance management, talent management and succession planning
Identifies associate training and development needs
Participates in associate selection, interviews and placement
Education
Bachelor's degree required. Focus on Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance or a
related field. Masters degree preferred.
Skills/Experience Required:
7+ years related experience at the Director level, with a mix of store, buying, planning & placement responsibilities
Strong analytical & financial skills
Knowledge of financial, economic, accounting theory & statistical modeling techniques
Detail oriented with strong managerial, planning, organization and project management skills
Ability to manage multiple projects & prioritize
Ability to mediate differences of opinion and facilitate resolution when conflicts arise
Ability to facilitate group discussion for maximum idea generation and problem solving
Ability to participate actively in cross-functional initiatives and projects
Excellent communication skills
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
